There is an old saying that goes something like this:

Luck is preparation followed by opportunity.

I've found that if I research what I want to buy carefully, then wait and watch, a good deal will come up and I'll act swiftly on it while others dither.

My research includes what is a good price, common problems to look for, options that may or may not be included and what they are worth.

Depends on a couple of things...
Are you capable and comfortable with working on your equipment?
Can you live with downtime, if the tractor breaks down?

I found my first tractor (Deere 670) by word of mouth. The second was a search on www.MachineFinder.com for a Deere 790 (needed a bit more PTO HP). The 3rd (and current) machine (Deere 4400) purchase resulted from a call from a dealer I'd bought the 670 from. All used machines, BTW...

As others have written...when you buy one, don't post asking if you got a good deal. Someone will rain on your parade (100% certainty) and there isn't anything you can do about it anyway.

I totally agree with the posters here. Do your research for options and problems. Have a good look for the price check. Just make sure your not getting soaked. Buy it. Don't brag about it and stop looking after the purchase.

I posted on here a problem about shipping my used (new to me)z465 from Arkansas. Someone replied I should have waited I could have had a better deal closer to home (Winnipeg). I never even posted the price.

Bought it for $3200 shipped $485 I figure I'm into it for $4000 I'm happy and thats all that matters. 160hrs

NOw my wife is going to fight me to do the mowing......priceless!!!

yep.. quit looking.. because time is a factor.. if you keep putting off getting what you want waiting for the better deals that DO eventually come along.. you will never get what you want..

I agree and would only add that " time is of the essence " when you find a deal move on it quickly...if you snooze....you lose....I had a chance to buy a Massey 150...one owner on Craig's List...I talked to him and he said it was it great condition and he had always kept up with maintenance but was moving and had to sell it....I had an appointment so I could not go that day but told him I would call him first thing the next day...he was asking $1.200 for it cash...I called the next morning and it was sold the previous evening...I snoozed and I lost....:(

yep.. had 3-4 tractors bought out from under me as I found them on the way to work, or while at work, and byt the next morning they were gone.

gun shows are the same way.. I generally like to walk all rows before making a purchase.. but now and then you see a piece and just know if you don't get it that it won't be there when you get back.

did it to me on this past weekends show. I was near the end of the last row.. wanted to walk the last 3 tables.. when i walked back.. poof.. deal was already gone.. :)
