I started burning E85 in my new truck right out of the gate. I know there is a mileage loss but I have a larger interest in thumbing my nose at big oil. I am researching making my own ethanol, I'm pretty sure I have the ability to do that.

Thumb your nose til it's raw .. Big oil will still take your money. AND the Gov't will get it's cut too. Who gets most of the profit from a gallon of gasoline ? Hint: it's not the oil company. Gov't does...

FactCheck.org : Gasoline Tax Profits

Remember taxes are taxes. The business doesn't pay them, the consumer pays it ALL in the form of end user price.

Be careful making your own ethanol. It is a federal crime to distill your own ethanol unless you pay a Special Occupational Tax (SOT). It is legal to make your own beer or wine for personal use, but distilled ethanol is a no no.

Good ethanol can run from $50 to $100 per gallon depending on purity and the reputation of the guy that made it..I can buy gasoline all day for less than $4 per gallon. I don't think you are going to want to be putting that in your cars tank. Besides when you starting buying that corn meal in any quantity.. well you see they monitor that, and the sugar you will need too. It is hard to keep these things secret. And a good copper worm is 2 inch copper coil and can really run up there in cost, nowadays. And you will need a good stream of water and a lot of propane to heat up your kettle. You could use wood, but it is going to have to be good dry wood, I am telling ya they are going to see the smoke. And I have heard they are using FLIR nowadays, to find you from the air.. Timber it just isn't worth it man. Too many risks and you can go to jail for a long time.. I advise against it. But whatever you think:)

I tried E85 for a time in one of my trucks. Went from 15.5mpg to 11mpg. Basically a 35% loss. My Co-pilot has a Yukon XL and the same story.

E85 is a crock. Drives up the cost of food and lowers your MPG.

My uncle owns a few Shell gas stations with service centers. He loves it. You will not have this issue since your truck is new but someone with say 50,000 miles and starts using it will have troubles real quick. If lucky its just a fuel filter but can be the pump or injections. Ethanol is a great cleaner and will play havoc on a older system with the rapid clean up.

He also loves it because in my case my truck went from about 300 mile per tank to just over 200. That means I stop in 35% more often to buy fuel and that is another chance to come in and buy a coke and candy bar, where they really make the money.

So my 2011 Chevy Siverado says Flex Fuel on it. Supposed to take ethanol with no problems. Does the above statement apply to designated flex fuel turcks in your opinion?

Timber lives near two of the three E85 stations in MA. So he can buy it anytime. Good to know about the moonshine though.

I'm gonna give E85 a shot too. Not to try and stick it to the oil companies, but its always nice to have options.

It is my understanding that it takes a lot of energy to make a gallon of ethanol. From what I have read by the time you count the decrease mileage component, it is a wash in energy used to create ethanol vs just using plain gasoline. If it weren't for government programs ethanol would not be possible as a stand alone business unit. Why pump money into an energy source that can't support itself. If we used sugar cane rather than corn, the math would work from what I understand. I am no expert, I may be reading erroneous information.
