Last month a read a news article on 10 brand names not expected to survive the year and Sears was one of them.

Thanks for filling in that gap in my memory. But where did he work? Selling tools? Or designing them? Makes a difference to me but clearly not to the court.

If you knew that why the h3ll do you ask me. If it upset you so much why did you buy one . quit your complaining and grow some.

Good question.

I think is is mainly because Sears is doing a worse job of what it is known for and Harbor Freight are doing a better job of what they are know for.

As in another post Sears has moved to the low rent retail spaces by default all over the USA. Trying to be stock brokers and insurance agents just did not work out for them.

Harbor Freight has a clear focus.

Sears has NO focus that is clear to me.

Can anyone think of one POSITIVE thing that Sears does well today?

Not really...My dad made me go to Sears every pay day and buy at least one tool..Most of them I still have..They have been great on the returns except for that one period of time that they gave a rebuild kit for bad ratchets..That was a really bad idea.

Kobalt tools really don't look bad, just don't really know what the life is as I only have a few Kobalts bought under duress. So far so good on those.

To answer your question, no I have not received anything from Sears. As I said I'd do, I sent the following to Sears today. I plan to give them 48 hours to respond, and if I don't hear from them, I'm calling their corporate offices to talk to someone about it. Why am I so "insistent" about this? Why don't I just let it alone? Its just damned wrong and I don't think a big corporation should look the other way when one of their contractors is taking advantage of customers like this "reseller" is doing. It's just wrong and I think somebody needs to stand up and say it's wrong... So now I'll get off my soapbox :)

Here's what I sent Sears today:

I contacted you by this website on Saturday, Feb 18, and have not received any response by you, so I am sending a second comment hoping that I get your attention to a problem that I believe to be inappropriate, if not illegal.

A merchant on your "marketplace" appears to be resellling harbor freight tools on your website. In some instances, he has marked the price up 20 times the HF price. One example of this is at the following weblinks, one of which is on your marketplace and one that is on the harbor freight site:

Sears: Online department store featuring appliances, tools, fitness equipment and more

3" Variable Speed Air Cutter

As you can clearly see, these two tools appear to be identical and the description, a "word for word" copy appears to be cut and pasted from the HF website.

I can provide you with at least 5 additional tools that have been placed on your website by this "reseller" from the harbor freight site.

I would definitely appreciate your attention to this matter and would like to know what your action to remedy the situation will be.

Thank you sincerely,

Have been buying Craftsman hand tools since 1968, aqnd have never had any problem with getting a replacement for any of them, but as I take really good care of mine and use them for the purpose intended I rarely have to get a replacment. I did have a set of USA made wood chisels I purchased back about 1985 that had been sharpened so many times they didn't cut well, I probably paid about $15 for the set of 4 when new. They told me they had never seen wood chisels like mine, but were happy to give me a set of new ones and the individual prices were close to $45 for the set. And yes, the replacments were all USA made. I aso had several Craftsman plastic handled 2 inch putty knives that needed replacement and they no longer offer those in the Craftsman brand, but they gave me new ones that were as good or better quality and wrote on the receipt "free replacmement". So if I need a replacment they will give me one.

Back about 1989 when Sears had Surplus Stores, I purchased a pair of lightweight wood handled posthole diggers that were labeled Craftsman for about $8 each. Last year the handles on one finally broke, and the digging end of the other pair had been bent so many times it flexed back and forth. Took these back to Sears, who has a lifetime warranty on yard tools (Craftsman) and of course they no longer sell wood handed PHD. So they gave me two brand new True Temper fiberglass handled PHD's, regular price $40 each, in exchange. I have NEVER had any problem getting tools replaced at Sears. If I return something they don't have in stock, they express mail me the replacement.

There are a lot of comments here saying Sears no longer sells quality tools, appliances, etc. In many cases, probably not. The cheapening of consumer goods seems to be commonplace today. Wife and I purchased a new GE chest freezer and GE side by side fridge back in 1993. The freezer lasted until early last year, and the fridge was still working fine when I replaced it last fall. Purchased Kenmore brand to replace both, we probably will get ten years out of these new ones if we are lucky.

So we now know who is driving Sears bankrupt. :D
