Sears Tools That Suck On The Price

You (and me) may be OK when all is said and done, JD. Even if Sears goes under, there's talk about keeping Craftsman, Kenmore, KMart viable. If so, then Craftsman may well become its own brand, not associated with Sears and their tools which you can get at Kmart, ACE hardware, etc may well maintain the warranty. Who knows????? LOL

In my area, Sears no longer sells electronics but leases out floor space to one of our large 'box' outlets sort of like Cosco renting cellphone boutiques to Fido or Bell.
The food trade does the same with leased shelf space.
Wallmart rents out space to McDonald and film space also.

I still vividly remember about 30 years ago, working on my lawn mower, had a 9/16 nut that was rusted on the bolt, cranking on it with a 3/8 ratchet and the socket cracked. I rammed my hand into the motor block, cut the top off my knuckle. I threw that socket at least 3 miles down the field (Yeah I know) and swore then I'd never use another "made in India" tool... Went to Sears on the way home from the hospital and bought my first Craftsman socket set. Since then, it's been "quality tools" for me... but now, I have compromised and use HF tools for "non heavy duty" jobs When I get into a really "stubborn" situation, I get reluctant to push or pull too much and think back to that day and cringe... :)

Locally here (Lansing, Michigan) Sears has maintained a large store with full lines of everything for at least 40 years now, and I cannot imagine them ever closing up as they seem to do a good business. They are basically the only centrally located tool and appliance and yard care equipment retailer (as well as other lines) and one has to go at least nine miles out from them to find another store that carries anything in those lines. Probably much of their customer base is because of the prime location the store serves.

In Pontiac, just 50 miles away, the demographics of the town changed dramatically in the past 10 years. Sears is in what once was a busy shopping center along with Penneys, Kohl's, etc. Target, Mervyn's, 2 theaters, Sams, etc were located all around it with Steak N Shake, Red Lobster, and others. Now, all that's left is Sams, Sears and Red Lobster. The rest have moved out of that area and relocated in places where there's a bigger "money base" When we drive past Sears, there's never more than 5 or 6 cars in the parking lot. By the back door (next to tools) we joke about Sears having my personal parking space. I've parked in the same spot every time I've been there in the past 2 or 3 years. There's never more than 1 or 2 cars back there.

Seems like there's always more employees than customers even at Christmas. We all wonder just how long Sears can hold out there before they close. About 3 years ago, the manager said the only reason they hadn't closed was because Sears owns the building and can't sell it to anyone, so they're stuck there. Hmmmmm ????

I used to live near a Sears located in what was once one of the three busiest malls in my state, Brookdale in Brooklyn Center, MN. Demographics changed and last year they tore down the mall except for a few small stores and Sears. Much like your Sears, this one has very few cars in the lot. I have no idea why Sears wasn't demolished, too.

yer 'quality tools' that you happily pax 3-4-5-6-7x for from NAMEBRANDCO likely come out a different packaging door of the same plant that makes them for our favorite chinese importer outfit.

PS.. My 1" airgun beats on my 1" and 3/4" sockets pretty darn hard.. in addition to the 6' pipe i can jump on when taking bit 2-3" bolts and nuts off heavy equipment.. ;) except my chinese 'big' set only cost about 85$ for a hard case, ratchet, breaker bar, 2 extensions, and sockets from 7/8 to 3"

would hate to see what that cost in matco, snapon or craftsman type money.... :)
