Snakes aren't my favorite thing. What kind is it and how big do they get?
In our neck of the woods it's more hawks, eagles, raccoons and mink that want to snack on our chickens.

Hello Mousfield, We call them carpet snakes or swamp python.I have had to move some about 16 ft and a neighbour said he had one 24 ft. I see in an article that they caught one in Indonesia at 49 ft.
My pictures are poor quality because its usually night time and I'm usually standing back a bit. They are not poisonious but I'm told if they bite you it doesn't heal very well. I have another shot of one caught in the act.

Regards Vince.

Pythons are so plentiful in the Florida Everglades that they have threatened many local species of animals. Just Google and you will find reports of them with deer carcasses in their stomachs.

I lived and worked in Southwest Florida for many years. When fishing on Lake Okeechobee in the Glades, a favorite way of fishing for Largemouth Bass is to hook a large shiner at the back or tail and attach a balloon as a float. The balloon offers little resistance and is quite visible even in the wind and waves. Pythons will eat the shiner and then attack the balloon. They are found over a very large portion of South Florida now because of their prolific breeding. Their increased numbers have become quite problematic.I sincerely hope that they don't create the same problems in your area. Sorry to hear about your chickens.

Saw a 1/2 hour program on TV about this a few weeks ago and yes they will take deer. Those Pythons seem to be everywhere in the everglades. They showed a map of the possible large area they could spread to, a number of states around Florida.
