1997 John Deere Gator
Hello,
New JD Gator 6x4; 1997; was looking at carb and noticed the top plate was marked A and B; looked like two seperate settings to put govenor rod; is it safe to move it to get more power? Seemed to work when I tried it but I am concerned it may hurt my gator; any thoughts?

:welcome:
Will be interesting to learn the answer to that.

I see by the manual, that there are apparently high and low elevation settings, but says see the dealer.

I'd stop by a Deere dealer and talk to the service head. They could answer or look it up in their tech manual.

try looking for a after market cdi ignition box, to replace the factory one , the carb isn't going to help you any until you start making other improvements.

Max rpm is when the throttle cable pulls that bell crank around to the 12 o'clock position iirc. That stretches the next spring to the governor arm the most. Pulling the throttle cable too far will reduce engine output.

Thanks for the responses but really was just looking for a little more power without damaging the engine. Is there room for play with out damaging it? I believe it can not exceed 3200 RPM

Does anyone know what the factory RPMs are set at to begin with?

That is what I was trying to tell you.
Only way to up the rpms would be a high tension spring on the throttle bellcrank that pulls on the governor arm.
Where does the bellcrank stop now when the throttle is floored? I adjusted the 6X4's we had at work and added much more acceleration and top end.
3600rpm isn't going to damage any small engine design that is also used on 60Hz generators.
The 6X4 is no Yamaha 700cc four wheeler so don't get your hopes too high.

Deere subbed one throttle spring for another. Don't know which had more tension.
