It certainly doesn't make sense economically. I'm still driving my 03 Tahoe, 64 miles a day round trip to work. If gas was $6 a gallon, driving my Tahoe, which is paid for, is still less costly than a hybrid car payment.
That's an apples to oranges comparison, don't you think? What if your Tahoe wasn't paid for? I bet the Tahoe cost every penny, of not more, than a hybrid like the Prius. Start with vehicle cost, then look at operating costs.

Our campus employes several thousand and there is a total of one recharge station in the parking lot. What does that tell you?
That electric cars are not widely popular yet? I'd say having just one charging station shows that they are ahead of the times.

I work on the development of hybrid system for automotive use (along with other projects), I don't get it and neither do the engineers I work with.

We figure the whole concept of the current hybrid speak is because it is politically correct and I'm making a living with it :)

Maybe your's and the engineers thinking in Detroit is the problem.

My Prius payment is the same as a Civic. $28,000 new.
My insurance payment is less. 45MPG and I drive fast
The wife drives 150 miles round trip three times a week to work
The Prius has 155,000 miles and never a problem, four years old.

4 years gas usage 3440 gal Prius 45 mpg $13,760 at $4.00 gal
4 years gas usage 7750 gal Tahoe again assuming 20 mpg. $30,000 at $4.00 gal
Gas at $4 gal x 4310 gal Difference (Assuming same milage traveled) = $17,240 difference.
Gas at $6 gal x 4310 gal Difference (Assuming same milage traveled) = $25,860 difference
I'll take the Prius anyday.

I made a mistake the Prius has 170,000 miles I'm not changing the calculations.
Walgren's drugstores and Several other business in this area have charging stations. Plus more are going in the I-5 Corridor in Oregon. My Prius is not the plug in type.

Purely Political Move

Representatives Ed Markey of Massachusetts, Peter Welch of Vermont and Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut, asked Obama Feb. 22 to release oil from the strategic stockpile. Republicans opposed the request.

霑*eleasing oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve would be, at best, a short-term benefit, Senator John Barrasso, a Wyoming Republican, said in a statement Feb. 28. 蜈クhis purely political move would cause more harm than good.

The Republicans, the energy industry and some Democrats oppose a release now, saying supplies must be available, for example, in the event Iran blocks the Strait of Hormuz, the transit point for 20 percent of the world逞エ oil.
.: US Senator John Barrasso [R-WY] :: Press Office :.

Releasing oil from the strategic oil reserve is not a good idea. There is a reason they call it STRATEGIC. Dropping prices a couple of cents a gallon for a few days is not worth depleting the reserve. We need that in case the flow of oil stops which it has not. Drilling is the long term solution.

Obama said the same thing about the Reserve.
Republicans agreed with Obama.

Yep one things about small cars they sure do save gas. BUT the other thing no one ever considers the damage during a crash.

NOTE the other vehicle in this picture......

My wife was driving a POS gas saver till I looked at it one day and wondered " how would this car do in a head on" , that week I sold it for a huge loss. I bought a large gas GUZZLER for for her the next day. About six months later she was hit head on by a drunk driver. I rolled up on the scene and she didn't have a scratch on her.

Nope - I will pay through the nose for gas all day long. I wouldn't trade saving any amount of money for safety.

By the way what is a leg or life going for these days. Anyone here willing to save $30K for their loved one...anyone, come on raise your hand. How about a leg, arm, kidney, brain damage, anyone willing to give up a leg for 30K?

$28k for a Civic? Ha ha!
They start out at $15k and even a loaded EX-L with leather, 17" alloys, bluetooth, navigation, etc... it's only $23k. Even the 44mpg Civic Hybrid is $24k...
My aunt replaced her Prius with a new Honda Civic and her insurance went down slightly vs the Prius, the explanation given was the battery replacement cost in the event of an accident and pedestrian accidents when they don't hear a Prius running past a crosswalk in electric mode. I'm sure every company is different.

Yep. Saw a bunch of crashes when I was in the Fire Department. Most bad. If everyone drove a smaller car, instead of what their **** told them to drive it would be safer U.S.A. That wasn't directed at you, but drivers in general. You will be hard pressed to find a full size Pickup in Europe. The United States and North America drive the biggest vehicles in common use. Doe's everyone need a SUV or Pickup, that never leaves the pavement? Detroit seems to think so.
I have a 98' Dodge pickup for farm use, trailers, hay etc...
http://www.iihs.org/research/qanda/rollover.html
While Googling SUV and Pickup Accidents I did notice a higher proportion on their sides or upside down as compared to passenger vehicles up right.

Seems like here the Suvs are hauling along at a good fast pace weaving in and out. Then suddenly they are turned over or on their sides and blocking the hwy.. Driving smarter would help, but it seems that driver education is not taught much any more here? Haven't noticed very many demolished cars like the one shown here, Looks like rescue cut the top and panels off? Wondered why Tahoes were so popular? I believe their fuel mileage is really too low?

In 2008 the MSRP for Honda Civic hybrid was 24,350. What they sold for was more about $26,000. I probably should have compared to a conventional Civic. I still choose the Prius.

As far as the battery is in the safest part of the car. Under the rear passenger seat. Yes they are quiet, but your still supposed to look for pedestrians. In Oregon you can't proceed in a crosswalk till the last person steps on the curb. Even if it is sixty feet away.

Anyone ever hear of HHO? This refers to breaking down water into hydrogen, hydrogen, and oxygen and I have heard that this gas can be sent to carbuerated vehicles pretty easily and offset gasoline consumption. Local news did a little blurb on it about a year ago, but I've never heard anything further or conclusive about it as a viable technology.
