What's the advantage or disadvantage of a skid over a tractor

have owned both wheeled ss and tractor. Comparing a tracked ss to a compact tractor is no where near the same. They all have their place, get what best suits your needs.

I agree, and don't know who insinuated that a skidsteer is a better choice than a tractor for a homeowner. Whether it is a renter, homeowner or farmer it depends on what your needs are, get what works best for the job.

YOu see 4-wheel skid loaders with hay bale accumulators/grapples working in hayfields (at least in the ads for these implements). The SLs are fast and nimble in that application.

Agreed, they both have their place, we have used them, but have no ongoing need for one. I love to watch a skilled operator run one of those things.

Maybe the short wheel base but at times I felt like I would rather have a good shovel. All things considered he paid almost 20k for it and I just didn't see the value, I think my 30hp tractor could drag two of those backwards. I can see the turning ability to be a advantage but that's it.

I had a friend try to move some dirt with his wheeled skid and all he could do was spin his wheels in the wet dirt.

Gotta be careful in comparing similar sized, or priced machines. A tiny skid steer is always going to be low on power. Just like a compact tractor can never compete with a full sized one on power.

Take a 40 hp tractor and a 40 hp skid steer and you will have a lot more lift and power in the loader between the two. But you will have more pulling power in the tractor. One will get into tighter spaces and the other is more comfortable to drive.

I have both a Cat 246 and a L3700. The skid steer is by FAR more powerfull, but for the homeowner I believe the tractor is more versatile. Not to mention easier on the turf,driveway,and anything else you drive over.

Take a 40 hp tractor and a 40 hp skid steer and you will have a lot more lift and power in the loader between the two. But you will have more pulling power in the tractor. One will get into tighter spaces and the other is more comfortable to drive.

Not necessarily so.... My JD110TLB will lift more than either a Bobcat T190 or S190.

No comparison on Hp though. The Bobcat has 50% more Hp.

And I haven't seen any of the Deere or Bobcat skids in the 40 hp range that will lift more than my 40hp 110.

However, if you consider agility, speed, manuverability, speed of hydraulics - lift time, curl time, drop time - there's no way the 110 could keep up with the S190 or even a lower lift capacity Bobcat 753 working in the dirt.

In a similar comparison; there's no way my Ag tractor 75hp could keep up with the 110 loading, unloading, leveling, digging - you name it - dirt work!

Right tool for the job at hand...

My Bad. I never considered a JD110 to be a compact tractor. I thought it was more of a small construction tractor designed for loader work, not farm work. And as such, it's design is like the skid steer in that it is using the majority of its hydraulic power for lifting instead of pulling.

Skid Steers are excellent machines. I prefer tracked skid steers. They will run circles around a tractor loader.

But comparing the two is like comparing a horse and a cow.... similar but still way different! :laughing:
