I think one of the key differences between buying a bag of rice in the store and the bucket products is the bucket products are also in sealed bag inside the bucket. Not sure how much of a difference that makes? I can buy locally produced beans and wheat in bulk off Craigslist for a lot less than they are sold in stores but I would have to put money into buckets, desiccant, bags etc.

The buckets I used to make beer are air tight. The look just like any normal five gallon bucket you could buy at a home store. I was getting five gallon buckets at the farm store for $1 a few years ago which was a danged good price. Not sure they have them anymore since the buckets had carried soy sauce used at the local chicken plants which have shutdown. The buckets and lid at the brew store were about $10.

I guess desiccant would be a good idea but that does not cost much.

Argentina went through an economic collapse in recent years; lots of stuff out there on what happened, the problems and advice based on experience.

Yeah I had posted a link to that over on the 'Doomsday Preppers' thread. Hosted on a different website but the same story. Interesting read.

Dan they also have a metallic bag inside that has all the o2 removed killing any bugs and making the food last longer. You can buy the bags and there are o2 pellets that will do the same thing.
A SuperPail is a combination of five things; a six gallon plastic bucket, a lid, a metalized plastic liner, an oxygen absorber, and food. Food is placed in the liner and an appropriate oxygen absorber is placed inside. The liner is sealed and placed inside the six gallon bucket and the lid is then sealed.

Sam's Club has a large selection of emergency food and supplies. I am not planning on building a $450,000 shelter or having a year's supply of food like the one guy did on the show. I do like the idea of having a 30 day supply for one person (90 meals) for $150 and a 55 gallon emergency water supply barrel for $69. It does make sense considering weather events such as tornados and ice when we lose power and the occasional times we have lost water pressure for several days.

How long does the food last in the containers?

A couple of questions have been nagging me all night. :D How long can rice and beans be stored? You really have to love the internet. Found the answers from what look to be good sources.

Will Rice and Dry Beans Last Forever? - Nagging Question - Food News - CHOW

White rice and dry beans have a varying shelf lifef not stored properly, they can get dried out and develop fissures in the grains. When cooked, they might have a cracked, popcorn-y texture that痴 more like couscous than rice, says Laura Murphy, manager of domestic and international promotion for the California Rice Commission. Old medium- and short-grained rice will also be less sticky after cooking. Long-grained white rice can last indefinitely if stored in a cool, dry place, says Greg Yielding, executive director of the Arkansas Rice Growers Association. 典hey致e found rice in archaeological digs that you could cook normally, he says. Brown rice, which contains oil in its bran layer, can go rancid. It must be refrigerated and will only last three to six months.

Dry beans are good for at least two years if stored properly. That means in a closed container in a cool, dry, dark place (like your cupboard), says Randy Duckworth, executive director of the U.S. Dry Bean Council. If they dry out too much, you can wind up with 塗ard seeds, beans with moisture content so low that they won稚 rehydrate and soften, no matter how long you cook them
Other conversations on the Internet repeated the problem with dried beans, they dry out and no matter how long they are cooked they will be hard. Some suggested long soaks in water prior to cooking, which I what I do anyway, but it seems like there is a point of bean dryness that this does not work.

You would think if the beans were stored as mentioned by Forgeblast they would last danged near forever since it would be hard for them to dry out.

Its funny Forge mentioned removing O2. I was wondering if I could siphon off the CO2 from beer fermentation into the beer/rice bucket to displace the O2. :D I sorta figured a way but plugging up permanently would be an issue.

In any case, I was thinking of buying in bulk and then using up what was bought over time. In the winter we eat quite a bit of beans and a little bit of rice. But I doubt we go through 10-20 pounds of beans or rice in a year. A big Pail O Beans or Pail O Rice would last us years. :D

We have a couple of five gallon collapsible water containers. Well one now, since a dang mouse decided to chew on one container. I noticed that Sportsman's Guide had very large collapsible water containers designed to fit into a tub. They even had little valves to removed water as needed. If we have enough notice of a storm we fill up the tub with water to use to flush toilets. We have a 80 gallon hot water heater for water supply as well.

Yeah the fireman guy on 'Doomsday Preppers' used one of those bath tub size ones. I had not seen them until I saw it on the show. Could be very handy if you have time to fill it.
