I was just thinking something similar...
But while we're here...
This last summer, while running the Cat 980g loader at work, a couple was heading down the county road that our mine uses between pits. They were headed to the lake with a couple jet skis on a trailer. Even though they were going maybe 20mph, that trailer came off the truck, moved into my lane, and ended up in the bucket of my loader. The jet skis were tied down great, but the trailer was done for. I didn't feel a thing in my 65,000 lb loader

Guess so, glad it did.
Read through most of the thread. Some very valid points made. One I didn't see was checking the ball of a bumper pull hitch. Ever had a ball snap off, I have. Didn't have a clue that metal fatigue would or could occur like this. It was an older ball, had been used with many trailers. Didn't have any obvious signs of cracks but, I can't say there definitely wasn't one because, it was already on my truck and to be honest, I hooked and went. The safety chains held but, I tell ya, when that trailer tongue smacks the back bottom of your truck's differential and pops the *** end of your truck up into the air, it does get your attention. Scared the pudd'n out of me. The ball's shank had snapped. The ball was still in the coupler. IOWs, check yer balls........ :shocked:
That was a long time ago but, I assure you, I check my trailer balls frequently ever since.
