Buying Advice IS IT JUST ME OR.......

I bought new in the fall of 2010. I wasn't going to pay $18,000 for a five year old machine when I bought a new one for a little over $20,000 with taxes. It didn't hurt that the new one was shinny and I had a warranty claim for the steering rack that would have been expensive.

Even though I keep looking on Craigslist at the used tractors, new is definitely looking attractive. Why not pay only slightly more for brand new, never abused, 0% financing, no lien risks, etc? Even the 20+ year old tractors have asking prices close to what they were new. ^^not2old pretty much sums it up.

IS IT JUST ME OR HAS THE USED TRACTOR MARKET GONE CRAZY?
<snip>
LOOKS LIKE I'M GOING TO HAVE TO ROLL SOME PENNIES AND BUY NEW............:confused:

I went through the same thing about 5 years ago when I bought mine. The up side of it is you don't have to worry about depreciation - these machines really seem to hold their value.

Don't think of it as a painful separation of you from your cash, think of it as a clever hedge against inflation!

i'm glad it's not just me then i'm on tractor house five to ten times a day and craigs list, machine finder ect. i guess i should have kept my kioti but wanted something with a little more value. i just hate the thought of financing part of it i have never liked a month to month payment but i guess that what keeps the economy going the bad part is i have 60tons of dirt and 300 pounds of ky31 fescu to spread and that shovel gets mighty heavy;)

The depreciation is all in the dollar, not the machine.

Which is one reason why our economy is going down the tubes.

Now I need to find a cheap rototiller to do my garden with; I'm going to need a cheaper source of vegetables than the supermarket.

Agreed. Time to go short on cash and all it's derivatives and long on things of intrinsic value. Anything that helps to reduce spending cash is good.

A new, quality, wood stove is on my short list. Backhoe has been on my long (5 year) list, but I've got near enough work lined up for it to break even.

The tractors have been phenominal values - just in terms of not having to hire out work for drainage, tree, yard and field maintenance. Great tasting food for a low cash outlay is icing on that cake. Best "hobby" I have ever known. Only downside has been people thinking I'm some kind of "hick" because most of the time I'd rather go till some soil than just about anything else. Good thing my wife is of the same mind.

5 years ago you could buy a brand new Kubota L3400 with some dickering for around $15 K. Today, this tractor's replacement is over 20 grand in some circles. As new prices escalated, along came used prices. Foreign steel market needs shot anything new made of steel into the stratosphere in the last couple of years.

Yeah if I wanted to SELL my tractor they'd want me to give it away but if I was buying te same tractor they'd want the same price I was asking and get mad if I offered less.

DITTO :thumbsup:
