A 78 year old cancer survivor (talks with one of the electronic devices held against his throat) was asleep in his home when two men broke in. According to the news reports when one of the thieves started up the stairs to the old man's bedroom the old man fired at least three rounds at him with a pistol. News report said a 22 but the guys at a local sporting goods/gun store said it was a Walter 32 automatic. The thief retreated but then came up the stairs a second time and the old man shot him with a shotgun. The other thief fled the scene.

Now the rest of the story, third hand but still pretty straight.

I bought some ammo at a local sporting goods/gun shop a couple days later. A couple of clerks there had worked with me in the past and my wife had taught both their kids in school. They told that some local law enforcement who had been involved had been to the store and filled in some info. First, one of the thieves told police that the windows in the house were up so they thought the man wasn't home (????). Second, the auto pistol JAMMED just as the thief coming up the steps turned to run. Aparently the old man did something that let the thief know that the pistol was not functional so the thief, angry that someone was resisting, came after him. The old man had just enough time to retrieve a 410 single shot and load it as the thief reached the top of the steps. The old man shot him in the throat. The thief that was shot insisted that he was not armed but the other thief was.

Lessons from this. Being old, poor, and in bad health does not keep you from being a target. When the shooting starts a revolver is the most reliable weapon to have in your hands. Never underestimate the stupidity of a thief.

I can't hit the broad side of a barn with a revolver, would much rather have an auto pistol in my hands. But the weapon in a lock box next to my bed is the simpliest I can get, a double action only point and shoot revolver.

"Lessons from this. Being old, poor, and in bad health does not keep you from being a target". The weak and helpless have always been preyed upon. Most people recognize this fact. This is not only synonymous with Humans, but also a dominant characteristic of the entire Animal kingdom.

I have always had, and still have, more confidence in the reliability of revolvers. But I did long believe I could shoot a semi-auto more accurately. When I got to qualiy, I use my Sig Sauer P229DAK (9mm), which is a lighter trigger pull than either of my revolvers. However, every time I go shoot 50 rounds with each, I have a slightly better score with the revolver; last time 91.6 with the revolver (.38 spl.) vs. 90.0 with the semi-auto.

It's to bad he could not get the other one as well.

Something don't sound right...

You would think with a 410 in the neck the guy would have died, That is a good lesson Keep you gun clean. The old guy deserves an attaboy for sure.

The old Walther 32 was probably as old as he was, and Magazine springs get weak and sometimes cause failure to feed, and/or oil and dirt or firing residue hardens and can cause failure to cycle after the first round. Not that the the Walther is not a quality pistol, but all guns require care to function reliably, some just more than others. I have seen plenty of revolvers "tied Up" too, from dirt and neglect or high primers. But generally revolvers are very reliable, especially if you stick to the major high quality brands to begin with. Good on the old man for defending himself.

Thought so too Sigarms. But that was the story I was told and what was on the news. After being shot at and fleeing the perp turned around and went back up the stairs ???? Seems like a death wish.

On a side note there was a Menonite in the gun shop buying a shotgun. Never seen that before. Strange things happening around here.
