Good for the shooter. He grabbed the right weapon for the job, a shotgun. Should have left his hand gun in his night stand. Using his hand gun could have cost him his life save for the few seconds that the thief gave him so he could grab his shotgun.

I have always had, and still have, more confidence in the reliability of revolvers. But I did long believe I could shoot a semi-auto more accurately. When I got to qualiy, I use my Sig Sauer P229DAK (9mm), which is a lighter trigger pull than either of my revolvers. However, every time I go shoot 50 rounds with each, I have a slightly better score with the revolver; last time 91.6 with the revolver (.38 spl.) vs. 90.0 with the semi-auto.

Did you shoot the revolver first and the the semi-auto?

I always shoot the the practice round better than the qualifying round. I wish I could just use the practice round for score. I usually leave too much time during some stages of the practice round so I slow down a bit, usually too much, during the qualifying round. :D

The old Walther 32 was probably as old as he was, and Magazine springs get weak and sometimes cause failure to feed, and/or oil and dirt or firing residue hardens and can cause failure to cycle after the first round. Not that the the Walther is not a quality pistol, but all guns require care to function reliably, some just more than others. I have seen plenty of revolvers "tied Up" too, from dirt and neglect or high primers. But generally revolvers are very reliable, especially if you stick to the major high quality brands to begin with. Good on the old man for defending himself.

Add to the list of "OH Scat! It did not fire!"

Old ammo.
Penetrating oil soaked the primer.
Week recoil spring.

I was being the safety officer on the range recently and a guys auto loader would not cycle fully. I THINK it was a Glock but I am not sure. The weapon would fire but then the slide would to fully cycle a round into the chamber. It happened 3-4 times before he went and put on some oil after which the weapon worked just fine.

yep that will do it... and they say the two of the "loudest" sounds you will ever hear is a "bang" when you expected a "click" and a "click" when you expected a "bang" :ashamed:

American Rifleman had an article about semi-autos a couple months ago that said the spring should be replaced every 1000 rounds. Odd are, that Walther had the original spring still in it. Either that, or the slide got caught in the bed covers.

I hate just wounding animals, even pests like rats. Too bad the government frowns on a final mercy round for violent criminals like these burglars.

Loudest or deafening silence after the hammer falls on a dud? Tell me you have not lightened the pull , by adjusting the hammer fall spring on a revolver..?

Yes, as a matter of fact, I did shoot the revolver first. I thought the practice round should make the next round better instead of worse. Now of course, I wasn't faced with the same time limits, both in shooting and in reloading, that we have on the police range, so I went and re-qualified on the police range today with the 9 mm Sig and shot a very disappointing 82.8. Minimum passing score is 80.

I am consistently shooting low right with the Sig and while I haven't had any expert try it, of course I'm assuming it's me instead of the gun. An instructor on the range today told me he thinks it's because I'm using the same grip I'd use with a revolver and suggested a change in the way I hold the gun. So I'll be trying that in the future.

Not me man, I have never had the bang when expecting the click thing (my brother did once tho...no major damage) and adjusting things on a revolver is something I would not attempt at my level of gunsmithing.. those things are intricate!.. I work on semi-auto's, but they are pretty simple. at least 1911's are.. :)

Something don't sound right...

That part of the country has some major meth problems. meth addicts don't act like your average burgular. Just ask amy LEO.....
May have been a couple of meth addicts needing something to trade for drugs, heard the old man cussing at his pistol.......
