I remember the Illinois State Police was one of the first big departments to go with the semi-auto

Yeah, when I went to the Northwestern University Traffic Institute for the 1971-72 school year, there were some Illinois state troopers in the class and they were carrying semi-autos back then, seems like they changed to the semi-auto around 1969 but I'm not sure of that.

Quite a few years later, I once read an "evaluation" report they did on the 9mm semi-autos they were carrying. At the time I read it, it struck me as almost comical because their conclusion was that the 9mm was a very good gun for them. And the reason for that conclusion . . . during the evaluation period, they had shot many, many people, at least one up to 9 or 10 times, but never fatally; not a single shot suspect died.:D

Congratulations on your find!!!!

Did you find it online or just happened to come across it? I've found that my best deals are the ones that just sort of happen without any planning. Somebody says they need a couple bucks and want to sell a gun type of deals.

Eddie

I ran across someone that was selling one in the 24hrcampfire.com classifieds. Much cheaper than I've seen them selling for on Gunbroker.

I seem to remember some problems with the ones delivered to the FBI and maybe a recall or am I misremembering?

You're correct. There was a recall for some trigger/safety work. You can tell if this work was done, by looking for two horizontal dots stamped near the serial number.

The 3rd generation S&W's are definitely a chunk of steel. I think you could use it for hammering in railroad spikes and not hurt it a bit

Fun website. I never heard of it before and just added it to my favorites. Not that I need anything, but it's fun to look at it. I do that with Craigslist too. What's funny about Craigslist is that since they banned guns, you have to be quick to find them for sale on there. Sometimes they are kind of creative in listing them. "thing that goes boom" or just a regular ad that disapears an hour later. I got lucky with a rifle that way, but was too slow on a shotgun that came up, then dissapeared.

As far as the recall on the 1076 look at the decocking lever, may have to push it down a little to see it, but there will be two little punch marks on the frame if it has been sent back for the update.
The update is just a replacement side plate, some were loose and could possibly let the trigger bar come out of place locking up the gun.
S&W will still do the update and it is free including shipping to and from.

Funny thing is that when everyone began adopting the "Wondernine", it was touted for its effectiveness and remember reading the seemingly endless articles of "9mm vs .45ACP, which is better". My uncle had own a Hi-Power for years by that time and of course there had been other 9mm's out for longer and determined not so effective; times change. I still have three 9mm
semi-autos, a G19, Sig 228 and Beretta 92 Elite II.

Bad thing is, I actually have to be able to hit something.

I thought there was something, I just couldn't remember. I actually owned a 3rd generation S&W for a while and it was quite well built though it was the compact 6906.

Range report:
Sorry no pictures, I left the phone back in the car and I stopped at the range between sales calls, so I was in a bit of a rush.

It fed 100 rds flawlessly and is a really nice handling and controllable pistol. It shot a little low with the fixed sights, but I was planning to put night sights on it anyway. The trigger feels like there is a lot going on "behind the scenes". When you pull the trigger, you can feel it overcoming the magazine disconnect and the fire pin block. Not a bad trigger, but it's not smooth and crisp. I'll get researching this. I already found that the magazine disconnect can be easily disengaged, by removing the rear sight. Apparently the engineers were smart enough to realize that the magazine disconnect function would be either a go or no-go with many PD's and made it very accessible. Personally, I don't like having a magazine disconnect, as I don't have it on any of my other pistols. Otherwise, I love the controls, SA/DA with decocker and half-cock hammer position. It's a very capable pistol.

It's also very comparable to a 1911 Commander size frame. I find this to be a very favorable size for concealed carry.

I have a Colt Delta Elite in 10mm and love the thing. Best part of it is the 1911's lend themselves to endless customization, particulary trigger work. I put a Bomar sight rib on mine so it feels just like my .45 wad gun.

One dissapointing thing about the 10mm is buying full power ammo. Most of the commercial stuff is wayyyy under loaded. To really get the most from the caliber, look at Double Tap ammo or of course roll your own.
