If you were buying a lawn tractor what would you get?

I agree, shell out the dough and get a good used commercial zero turn, take care of it and it will be the last mower you'll ever buy, heck, your grand kids probably won't have to replace it.

How do zero turns handle hilly/rough terrain? I read somewhere that they were kind of tippy, and should only be used on fairly flat/level areas.

That depends! I can cut across a hill I never could with a regular lawn tractor. The Ferris is very wide and the tires are cambered in, it is very stable. Wet grass is a different story, you lose traction which makes you lose steering. That can get scary, but I still think it would be a challenge to flip it.

I would opt for a zero turn as well. Watch craigslist for deals, it may take some time but you will find the one you are looking for inside your price range. I have seen a Kubota Zero Turn go for $1500 with a bad head gasket, guy bought it, threw a new gasket on it, and sold it for $6500. That was a deal, I have also seen Cub Cadets and Toro's go for $800-$1700 with 60" decks and low hours. Just watch for deals, they come up all the time.
