With much of the nation gripped by Mega Millions fever this week, hopefuls inundated convenience stores, gas stations and other ticket outlets in 42 states, Washington, D.C., and the Virgin Islands, forking out nearly $1.5 billion.

My calculus teacher at college said his plan for the lottery is to make everyone a winner. You buy a ticket for $1 and you receive $.46 in prize money.:laughing: People voluntarily paid about $800 million in taxes for a chance to win it all. As long as you received a dollar's worth of enjoyment it was a good deal.

Somebody's life is changed forever. I wish him/her the best.

Nope, I did not win. I got one number. However, my winning lottery numbers will be coming up when I retire in less than 2 years!

What I find stupid about these huge lottery jackpots is that it makes little sense to pay just one winner 640 million bucks...change the system so they will pay 100 people 6.4 million bucks instead. Nobody NEEDS such a huge sum of money, better to spread it around.

It's not stupid, the tax rates are higher so the gov't gets even more of the money!:laughing:

Lottery is gambling...even this big lottery is being split 3 ways now (at least...may be more to come)
Doesn't matter if it makes "sense". Very little gambling makes sense.
So, I'd leave it like it is...

The ticket sales would not have been 1.5 Billion for this drawing had in not been for the jackpot being over 1/2 Billion Dollars. After taxes the "system' is about a billion ahead. The is big business and looked on by the people as a Happy Tax.
