Not to make light of the tragic accident, but it reminds me that lots of airplane crashes in general aviation are due to fuel starvation. Either somebody forgot to fuel the plane or they shut fuel off to the engine.

I have only skydived once, did the 6 hour class thing where you are actually on your own once the two instructors you jump with let go. That high up you have no sense of falling, just a really strong wind. I think the last 50ft or so was probably the scariest where you had a real awareness of the ground rushing up. Letting go of the plane was really cool as well. Overall I thought scuba diving was much more interesting.

My experience exactly! Jumped once after 6 hour class, IT WAS GREAT!!!!

That said, I would never do it again, because I remember, basically forgetting everything I was supposed to do after the jump, if there was a problem. There was not, so I made it. I would recommend it to anybody. It is an amazing experience, and the complete lack of feeling like you are falling was the strangest.

Jumping out of the plane was easy! There were 4 of us and the pilot in a tiny plane with no seats, pretty much on top of each other, had been in class all day, it was HOT, the parachute straps were hurting my nuts, and we had to fly around for a while due to cloud cover. I was the first to go and when the jump-master said go, I jumped, I could not wait to get out of that plane!!!!

Not about jumping out of perfectly good airplanes but....

A few months back a store owner was murdered during robbery. Completely senseless as usual. What was unusual was that the guy was from Yemen. His Customers said he was the nicest guy, ya da ya da ya da. One said that if you were short of money when buying something he would lend you the extra. The lending and him being from Yemen stuck with me.

How many small stores will lend money to a person?

A few days ago THREE people were murdered in a store in a rural area of NC. All three were related and the youngest was 15 who the only son in the family. The teenager was sweeping floors when the thugs came in and shot all three family members to death. Completely senseless.

The people who were murdered were from Yemen. The Customers said they were the nicest people, ya da ya da ya da. One said that if you were short of money when buying something he would lend you the extra....

I have driven through the town where the murders happened. Real small place, kinda in the middle of nowhere and stereotypical rural America. The town is called Farmville.

The community seems to have come together over the murders and hundreds gathered for a pray vigil. It is interesting to me that the national media has not picked up on the story since it has people of all colors praying for victims who were immigrant Muslims in a largely Christian community. I guess having people come together is not news worthy.

I wish we would get some store owners from Yemen. Our local gas stations have employees that ain't so friendly. They might be safer in our town with the PD ans Sheriff office so close by.

Good things are not news worthy. No grab a person and shake them up feeling.

That is not to say that good things do not happen all around and everyday. I know people are basically good at heart, and goodness and kindness will prevail.

I am glad NBS Nightly ends their broadcast each night with something good. That was a brilliant idea. Sort of like the old TV sign-offs. Remember those? America wrapped nice and good.

Too bad about the store owners. I hope they catch the perps and treat them badly.

Yep, the news media is all about getting people shook up.... I gave up on TV news decades ago but I remember when I did watch they were putting positive news at the end of the broadcast.

The Sheriff was getting quite a number of leads and the store had some pretty good cameras. From the photos it looks like the cameras recorded the murders, and while the faces of the thugs were covered, it looked like they could be identified.

Three men have been arrested for the murders of the three employees I mentioned previously.

Each was charged with murder, first degree kidnapping, robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery.

We operate tractors, I doubt that sky diving is any more "dangerous" than that.
Almost every week somebody gets wrapped around a PTO shaft DESPITE guards and warnings.
Almost every week there is ANOTHER new thread on this forum asking how to disable whatever safety interlock.

I don't know that bleeding out from a lost arm is any "better" than smacking the ground at 120 or so - slow vs quick.

Its a rush for sure and I agree, there is little/no sense of falling, just a very sudden high speed wind.

Once all kitted up and in the plane the psych level is SO high that just about nobody backs out of their first jump.

I am distressed as well as a little bit surprised at these accidents, the reserve is SUPPOSED to automatically deploy at 2,000 ft.
Come to think of it, I'm not too sure that the automatic reserve is "required", just that I always had that type where I jumped.

As they say at the drop zone, I'd rather jump out than land with HIM at the controls (-:

My biggest fear was power lines, which was fairly irrational given the landing approach paths are worked out ahead of time and you are (SHOULD BE) well above them.
We do know how dangerous plane landings are ?
