i assume the fix is fairly straight forward. how can i get the axle apart to replace the (i presume) leaking seal? this is the front left axle.

Here is the parts diagram. The seal is part 22. Mine also leaks a bit but less than a cup a month so just easier to add some fluid then mess around with breaking something more expensive trying to fix a small part. Not worth floating to the dealership either. I'll wait for something more worthwhile and potentially pay more later.

And per other threads and from my experience with my 4300, just crack the dipstick plug a bit to allow some venting, as with use the oil will heat and push out past the seal.

not following this...you are saying by cracking the dipstick plug it will prevent it from leaking? i'd worry that dirt/contaminants can get in if its cracked.

I agree, that's why it is non-vented in the first place.

the leak looks to be coming more from seal 33.

also, i just dont like leaky things. if stuff can get out, then stuff (dirt etc) can get in. and i like clean garage floors :)

Cracking it provides the venting to release the pressure when the oil heats up from use.
Worked great for me, and am less worried about any dirt that gets in, vs. blowing out the seals and having the mess on the wheels. But putting in new seals without providing a way to get venting will just end up doing a repeat...I'd think.

There are threads here that discuss a method to alter the dipstick plug to get venting. A search should bring them up for reading.
