You don't need a large object like a truck tire in the fast lane to get into big trouble. Years ago I was in the fast lane on I270 (St. Louis County) driving home from work in my Subaru SUV. Hit a piece of metal trim in the road. It cut the sidewall on both the front and rear left side tires--double blowout. Fortunately the traffic behind me saw what had happened and gave me room to move to the the right shoulder. Had some fruit in my looms that time:eek:.

My favorite obstacle was off I 270 in Columbus, Ohio. Got off the exit ramp, one of those continuos right turn lanes. As I rounded the bend I was able to see a manhole cover partially removed. Sticking up in the air. Not enough time to avoid. Tried to straddle it in my F150. Caught the top edge and sent it spinning. Right through my drivers rear wheel and tire, took out a nice chunk of the wheel, then it went air born across 3 lanes, into opposing lanes. No one was hurt, but I sure shocked me how far that cover went in the air.

Spring Break in South Padre Island, TX. Crossing the bridge to the island in my buddy's sisters car. Old style aluminum framed folding lawn chair laying in the road. Put a thumb sized hole in the gas tank. A fella from MX came and took the tank, brazed the hole shut and brought it back. Then we went home.

Why not take three minutes and remove it yourself ? Why would someone call a police officer twenty miles away for such an easy fix. Besides you could prevent a terrible accident with an unexperienced driver.
Next time take a little initiative. It doesn't cost anything, and maybe you will feel better about yourself. I have done it countless times from tires, wood blocks from semi trailers, to dead animals. Always carry gloves in each vehicle you operate.

My event (OP) was at midnight on a 6-lane interstate highway with cars & trucks going 75-85 mph, with the tire/rim laying on the inside lane on a dark stretch (remember I didn't see it until it was right next to my front-left corner). I would've had to cross 2+ lanes to get to it, stand it up & roll it back across 2+ lanes. Too exciting for me. I know, I could run to the median, wait, stand the tire up, return to median, wait, & make a mad dash when the coast was clear.

About 20 years ago I was driving down I-8 in San Diego when traffic came to a stop. About a quarter mile later I passed a small compact car straddling a semi tire with all four wheels off the ground! About another quarter mile and a semi on the shoulder missing a tire. Bet that was a wild ride.

Reminds me of an incident I saw years ago one Sunday...the time was right after church would have let out so I have no doubt it was a carload of "good religious folk". I was the second vehicle behind a semi tractor/trailer on a good two lane highway with wide paved shoulders. The car ahead of me pulled out to pass the semi and just putzed by it at the same speed he was doing when he caught up to the semi, only a few mph difference in speed. This wouldn't have been a bad thing to do in and of itself, but he forced the oncoming vehicle over onto the shoulder or else they would have hit head on. I saw it about to happen and hit the brakes and pulled over onto my shoulder and the vehicle behind me diid the same, both of us expected the same outcome. If the oncoming vehicle was driven by as brain dead a fool as the passing vehicle, it would have been a huge accident. Weather was clear and sunny, so no excuses on that angle. The passing car traveled a couple of miles farther then turned off onto a grid road. I have no doubt that driver considered himself a good, safe driver...and a good Christian to boot.

Two minutes to remove a tire that could cost a life. I don't care how busy the road was. The lazy way out is to report the incident to the police. The right thing to do is get off your butt and move it for others to make it safe. Too many " me, me , me , " people without the consideration of others.
I have removed tires, plywood, metal, 4x4s from flat bed trailers, and still live to tell about it. I like to think it is a small contribution to a very busy world.
