Any one ever dug a 4' deep hole?

Yup, dug one fairly quickly for trash. As per prior posts, it's a lot easier if the FEL is wider than the tractor tracks. When the hole gets more than a few feet deep it can be challenging to back out unless you've got 4WD or constructed a gently sloping ramp into the pit. You initially don't have to back out each time to unload dirt from the FEL, but as one gets deeper it can be a tad difficult to hoist the dirt cleanly onto the front or sides of the pit without much of such cascading back in. As far as depth, I'd not like to get in so deep that the sides of the trench were higher than my head, in which case a cave-in would not only make it VERY hard to extricate the tractor but could bury you - in which case they might as well leave your body there, buried in the "action position" - sitting on a tractor.

Another little trick if you need some extra bucket width is to cut some old cutting edge,weld some flat bar at 45 on the rear edge and bolt it to the bucket sides regards

i figured it was something i could pull off, ive dug 2 feet deep water lines and electric lines before just using the fel and gouging out the ground and it worked good. What this upcoming project is, is a 750 gallon rain water storage tank.

My fel is wider than the front wheels so that shouldnt be a prob and i figure i will have to do a little shovel work getting the ends of the hole fairly square.

im still laughing at the guy that said he would be concerned digging one that was near or over his head :laughing: and i agree, that would make me just a little paranoid to say the least, but this 4 footer should be ok. Will try to get some pics of it all once i start.

Water tank. Sure.

I believe the law says you have to bury her 6' or more below the surface.

2 feet of dirt is going to be dumped and spread over it when im done, with the massive drought we had in 2011 i figure we can use all the extra gardening water we can have.
