My neighbor has the above tractor. It's got fairly low hours and has had some work done to it already. He says it was a pretty good runner when he got it but shortly there after it's been running poorly. Pretty sure he said the injector pump and injectors have been replaced. I don't know if the mechanic who did the work really knows what he was doing though. I know that it seems down on power and it's very smokey and acrid smelling smoke. I'm not a diesel mechanic but I know some and have a fair grasp. My thought is that the injector timing must be off, probably late, and so it's not giving things time to burn and make power. Does anybody know how to adjust the injector timing on this motor? Any other ideas of things to check?

To advance or ****** the pump timing is very much like that of a spark ignited engine. Simply loosen the three nuts that hold the injector pump to the accessory drive housing and rotate inwards or out depending on what you want.
Any diesel mechanic should know that.:thumbsup:

That's assuming that the injectors and the individual barrels and plungers have been calibrated, and the engine has already been timed.

You don't happen to know if there is a service manual available somewhere? Preferably a downloadable one.

I don't know much about what the mechanic may or may not have done. I just figured that the pump timing made sense, at least to my mind, on why it was down on power and really smokey. If you have suggestions on what to check first that'd be much appreciated.

Would the engine need to be timed if it hasn't been apart? Would the bbls and plungers on a new pump come timed or calibrated?

To my knowledge there isn't a shop manual available for these tractors,. especially one for the fuel system specifically. Only the operator's and parts manuals.

Check the air cleaner. You should be able to shine a light through it. If not, replace it. Don't blow it out.

That depends if the fuel injection pump assembly has been removed or not. It could conceivably be a tooth off one way or another if it was.

Yes, they should be. The fuel injection pump assembly and the governor are sold as one assembled unit, and the plungers are all timed (synchronized) to the rack.

Well I'm out of state at the moment for a funeral. When I get back I'll take a look and see if checking the engine timing is obvious or if I'd need more direction in checking the timing. If it looks like it's timed right I'll advance the pump timing a bit and see if it has the desired effect.
