Manual hydraulic pump for dump trailer

Take the starter motor apart and install a pulley on the end. Use a V belt to drive the power steering pump all mounted to a bracket you would fab/weld up. You may need a larger reservoir and then simply adapt the hydraulic hoses to your cylinder.

You will need a valve to control up and down of the dump bed but it should work just fine.

Do you have a tractor with remotes? If you do why not just install some long hoses and use the tractors hydro system to do the dumping?

Got it!!!,,,,my main question was on the hydraulics. Would I need a valve?? Or could I just let the bed come down via gravity,,,by just shuting the pump off. I have a single action cylinder.

I'm also wanting to use this trailer behind my pick up so it needs to have it's own system.

It would seem to me that if you powered the system up and shut off power that a valve would suffice in a gravity down system, configured correctly of course.

So I would have a feed line running from the pump to the cylinder. Another line running from the vent to the oil tank. Where would I put the valve?? I kind of thought that the weight of the bed would push the fluid out of the cylinder and back through the pump into the holding tank,,,,,no??

The old class 8 cab over tractors had a hand operated pump that worked two double acting cylinders to jack up or jack back down the cab.
If there is a big truck salvage yard close you might check with them .

You may want to post up in Hydraulics sub forum where JJ and others will see it. Your valve will probably need to proportion the flow between the cylinder and a return to throttle the speed and avoid deadheading the pump.
