I have been looking for a large tow behind broadcast spreader and was looking at the 3.5 (175lb) unit from Deere. But after reading some of the reviews on this unit, it seems kinda cheap with the gears stripping and flow control cable.

Does anyone here have any experience with these or could recommend a nice heavy duty unit that will hold 175+lbs of material.

Thanks...

I have several broadcast seeders including the one you speak of my take on these is the things are to cheap to work well. I had to fight with mine last week and it was a PITA, but I have had poor luck with the 40" drop seeder/spiker unit too. I have a larger 3PH spin spreader, Turbo Spin 450 or 550 IIRC which throws a much better pattern and farther too. I think next time I need the seeder I will use the larger one on my x749 and skip the homeowner stuff.

A better suggestion if you need a small tow behind would be to look at the Frontier SS1022B. Here is a link to the Frontier spin sreaders.

Found this thread by search for SS1022B. I am curious if any decisions were made about a spreader.

I have heard great reviews about Herd brand spreaders for their ability to spread wet sand/salt mix in freezing temperatures, but I was quoted about $2,000 for a small one to fit my 2305! I am wondering if the SS1022B can spread calcium or salt. A towable spreader powerful enough to spread ice melt is appealing to me because ice melt chemicals are so rough on metal. I don't want to ruin the back of my tractor when ice melt chemicals get all over it.

Thank you,
Bill

Check these out, never ran their small ones, but I have pulled the full size many a mile. They know how to build one that lasts.
Stainless don't last forever but these with care last a good long while with highly corrosive urea.

Does it have to be a PTO spreader?

What about a Pro grade walk behind, like a Earthway? Made out of stainless. Designed for salt. EarthWay

They also have a stainless tow behind, but I dont know if it will handle crystals as large as road salt. But you could call them.

Ideally an Epoke drop spreader would be the perfect unit. Either the PM 1.4 (PTO) PM 1.4 | Epoke North America or the towed SKE8 SKE 8 | Epoke North America .. Probably the most common municipal sidewalk spreader.. Handles sand and salt easily.. Downside is extreme cost when new.. However they do come up in surplus auctions fairly frequent for not a whole lot of money.
