Removing rust from stone?

By the time we replaced the old, rusting cover on this chimney, obviously the damage had already been done. Looking for the best way to remove the rust now that we have a new stone based cap.

I've seen numerous recommendations for muriatic acid and I did try that on one small spot to test and it seemed to work ok, but some say that this acid will damage the stone and mortar.

Also saw links to some other possibilities such as this Klenztone product.

Would appreciate any input re. personal experience with this kind of project.

If real stone try oxygeninated bleach (Oxyclean) is one brand. Won't bleach out stone or mortar. I've had good luck with rust on concrete, the longer it sits the better it works.

This product is gentle, but very effective. And works almost as fast as muriatic acid.

Menards's sell it in quarts. Many hardware stores sell it in pints, but you will go broke that way.

I also noticed this product, which I have not tried, lists brick and stone on the label.

You might also consider sandblasting with a fine medium.

If you do use an acid like Hydrochloric, muriatic, make sure and rinse all surrounding metal good. And dilute well with water, full strength is very aggresive.

If I thought sandblasting would do the job, that might be the way to go. I've called a number of rental outfits but none around here have any of that equpment. I see prices for blasting systems all over the place and just don't know enough about it to consider buying.

I'll continue to ask questions locally and see what I can come up with.

Super Iron Out !! Make a poultice and smear it on , leaving it on for quite a while, then agitate and rinse. Available lots of places , many hardware stores, some dollar stores. Not too pricey and it works.
