I've gotta kill that Fox!!!

I didn't feel like reading through 13 pages, so I hope you got the thing. They sure are terrible little things. Saw one just a couple hours ago in my backyard, but they've been all over lately. Now I'm scared to death to let my dog out who is just a little tiny thing. She'd put up a good fight, but she's to fat (and stupid) to run. Now every time I let her out I'm standing on the porch waiting for that thing to pop out looking for lunch. Time to use that second amendment!

Martian,

I have not gotten the fox. Only time I've seen it was as I was driving un-armed on the neighbors place.

Grrr...

Had a buddy call me up and asked me if I wanted to shot some fox, so I showed up at his place about 8 pm and we sat around for awhile, then about 5 minutes to 9 we went out and he took a few hot dogs and put them by the lamp post. We then opened the back of his pick up and climbed in. about 30 seconds before 9 he said get ready, and wouldn't you know it the fox showed up right on cue.

He told me he had been doing this for a week and every night around the same time a fox came in for the hot dogs, it would gobble them up and leave, until he started shooting them. You might try the same tactic, and good luck

Tell me more!

I had heard they would only approach live bait. How did he get it to show up at 9pm? How many has he shot? How do they learn the others got shot at the hot dog spot? Very interesting!

I am sorely tempted by this method.

He just saw one on night and decided to give it a go. He would throw the dogs out by the light and sit in the house watching, and checking the time they would come in. They would also hit the dogs and move on and he would use two dogs broken in half, so you had to be quick.

Don't know how the ones behind it figured it out put we shot 3 foxes at 9 pm three nights in a row, and he had already shot half a dozen before he called me. I'm just figuring with a foxes keen sense they follow behind each other, in a territorial way picking up scraps from the ones before it. All I know is the hot dogs worked. They were not directly under the light but off to the side were you can see the fox when he appeared but not in direct light.

Moss....I am seeing a very disturbing pattern here. That's twice you have been "un-armed" ....don't let that happen again:D

I never walk out the door here without my leatherman and some kind of firearm. Usually it's a Henry Golden Boy 22LR. I bought a couple of leather scabbards off fleabay cheap, one's on the 'wheeler, the other on the tractor....so I have no "excuses";)

"How did he get it to show up at 9pm?" They are critters of habit. If the show up at 9 one night then chances are they will show up at 9+- the next night

We have a fox here. Stepson's australian shepard decided to chase it and she is fast. After about a minute fox decided to quit playing and ditched the dog. Them foxes are fast.
It is amazing punctual critters are. When we were feeding the cat outside we had racoons, opossums and skunks trying to get it. Feeding times were based on critter type but you could set your watch by them. Took a year and a half to trap out the raccoons, they were the worst. Skunks gave up the easiest and didn't need to trap any. We had moved the cat food in the garage and I guess the critters could smell it.

They do seem to develop schedules. A trail cam is a great way to get to understand them. For example I have deer that come into my yard every Wed night with very little variance. It's been 2 years and they're there virtually ever Wed at about the same time. Our predators are slightly less predictable (probably following food), but when there is a food source consistently they seem to show up consistently. We had racoons that would show up at the bird feeder every night at the same time. When I started chasing them they started to get smart and only showed up when the lights were out. Eventually we removed the food and they stopped coming.

The coons and possums would raid our carport and chew the lid off the rubbermaid container, had to buy a steel trash can and close the garage door sooner...All our small wild critters seem to like cat food??l
