Lots of Yanmars
i know most smaller jd have yanmar engines but our mechanic tried to tell us that if you put a ym & jd of similar models, that the parts r interchangeable. is this true or partly true?

Well if Yanmar makes the engine for the JD then probably true. So much commonality now-a-days with brand crossovers and all. Then with our international atmosphere currently, some of the badge are made here and others made there from local and imported parts from all over.

Who knows but JD.

One thing I'll say, and I haven't seen anything from China in the tractor dept. although I have seen some pretty nice stuff coming from there, I have not seen a bad new(ish) tractor. Yes there are instances and sometimes they are owner created instances but especially with the popularity of the diesel engine, they are rugged and are real reliable tuggers....I know, I have one.....a 57 pto hp. Pacific rim 4wd vs a '74 JD 100 hp 2wd.

The parts interchangeability between JD applications where Yanmar is the power and gray market and even US spec Yanmar engines is not well documented as far as I have seen.

Hoye probably has one the best grasps on what fits what but to say definitively parts will fit is probably going to get mixed answers on here.

Partly true. For example a key for one will start most of the others. But Deere wrote their own specs for Yanmar to build. In many cases Yanmar put existing parts into the 'Deeres' that came off their assembly lines. But you will find differences even in the models that look similar, for example the exhaust on the opposite side of the head, and 3-speed PTO only on the Japan market Yanmars. Plus Deere made a completely different parts # system, and nobody ever wrote a Deere/Yanmar crossreference database.

Hoye is expanding into providing parts for the Yanmar-Deeres, but they probably have to try-and-see for every single part before they list it as a Deere replacement. Surprisingly, there is better aftermarket parts availability for Yanmars compared to the similar Deere models.

The dealer that sold me the Yanmar I have, told me that if he didn't have a part, the JD dealer most likely would. I'd just have to pay for that high dollar green paint. :D

That kind of smells of someone wanting to reassure a customer, and who hasn't tried to do that themselves...

Probably. But I was asking him about engine parts, filters, and such at that time.

I know that some of the jd models are made by yanmar with a jd badge only thing I can say is that working on thermo king engines witch say ingersol rand but are actually yanmar engines even some of the Kubota parts look interchangeable with yanmar wouldn't surprise me if some of the jd parts and yanmar parts are the same also heard no idea if it's a rumor that Izusu and yanmar had or still have kind of a joint venture going on anyone else know more on this

Agree on the Thermoking refrigeration units units with Yanmar engines. I looked locally for a Thermostart replacement (manifold heating element) and found it as a genuine Perkins part at a Thermoking dealer, who said it is used in their Yanmar engines. Later I read that Perkins and Yanmar pooled or exchanged some patents in the early 70's so the Yanmar Thermostart module is apparently made under license from Perkins. And more recently I found one steering box that appears in Yanmar, Kubota, and 70's Datsun, differing only in the length of the steering column. I think the 15A one-mount alternator we see on Yanmars also appears on Kubotas.

As for Isuzu/Yanmar - I've been reading this Yanmar forum since 2003 and I've never heard this before. Anybody know?
