Four feet high isn't going to stop deer.

48" wouldn't even stop my chickens, but their wings aren't clipped.

We just built a chicken coop with a fenced run. I was just looking at this the other day and thinking it might be nice to let them free range a bit.

I can't let them do that without something like this to keep my dogs out just in case. Never a problem when I am out with them but I travel for work often and when my wife is out taking the three dogs out with the two kids for a walk - I don't want to have her worry about it.

So whats the consensus - will this keep the chickens in or not?

Yeah, I'm not so sure about keeping deer out, my main concern so far is raccoons. They have dug up half of the asparagus I planted, and several tomato plants that I just transplanted. I also plan on using it for my chickens too, as I had a predator attack wipe out one of my pens. I would love to free range the chickens, but it does not seem practical when I am not home. I went a ahead and ordered a couple of sections to test it, so I will post the results and ,y assessment.

4 feet will stop most if not all the deer. deer will mostly try and go under something rather then over it. If you lean the posts out at about a 20 degree off vertical and have at least 4 hot wires it keeps them out. We have been keeping deer out of the garden for years this way. I have been told that sometimes a single deer will figure it out but it has not happened to us yet.

we also keep squirrels off the peach trees with electric. put plastic edging the type that goes into the ground and has a round top. you can staple the first wire to that then run additional wires about 1.5 inches apart to about a foot. for coons the same would work. use the deer fence and add additional bands a few inches apart up to 2 feet. We set steel corner posts then use the fiberglass push in stakes on the straight runs. With the glass posts you can tape the wire or ribbon at any location you want. The main thing is to get a good powerful charger, one that hurts when you or something hits it not the little dog and cat ticklers.

Looks like they have some fence 68 inches high that might work for Deer if you ran a tape above the fence to get to 7 feet high.

Our backyard is fenced in with chain link. Not sure about the height right now but it is just regular height. Anyway, sometimes when the chickens are out they will fly over the fence to scratch in the backyard. I have never done it, but I have seen some people clip the chicken's wings and then they can't fly over. If you let chicken's stay out they will roost in trees, much higher than 48".
