I am not a fan of spiral staircases ( the catacombs in Paris turned me off if them for sure) but I am trying to not let that bias my next statement of are you sure?

My concern is what we are facing in our own home design whupich is that we would like to grow old in it. Stairs and the elderly don't mix well but spiral stairs are really not great.

I hear ya, but the pro's outweigh the cons and the space thing is a big con of a conventional staircase. I do really like the look of them, something appeals to me. Cost is a factor, but I am building my own kitchen cabinets, so I figure I can drop some $ on the stairs.
I started a thread down in the Rural sub-forum about the opinion on the width of spirals. One place recommends a 5' wide when I have been pricing 4'. They claim that a 4' is too narrow and they might be right.

Motor....You might want to take a look at this version of steps as similar to spiral but with a twist...you could also stain them any color you want..

Brin, those have to attach to a wall and that won't work. My staircase will be in the center of the house.

FB, oh yes...I have drooled on that webside a few times.. beautiful work.

RE: Spiral Stairs.

I grew up in a house with spiral stairs. My advice... Go as wide as you dare. If you go narrow you'll regret it the first time you try to carry a box or a pile of clothes or anything up or down the stairs.

Now you've got me all nostalgic for my childhood home. There were three of us with bedrooms downstairs. All three of us had thick calluses on our left hands from rubbing on the twisted metal railing as we slid down the stairs. I could probably have driven a nail with that callus.

Is there a cover hatch to close off the hole into the basement?
Some winter night when you have howling, shifting Mariah winds and a power outage you may get more smoke from your wood burner up the stair hole than up the chimney pipe.

The safe width and depth for your feet along the outer part of the tread are what is important. Between there and the pole is just wasted space X 2.

Gee, why not go crazy and put in an elevator. Surely you are mechanically inclined to figure out one of those caged type seen in movies. Wouldn't that be cool and old age living makes it practical in the future.
