Driving safety and seat belts cant be overstated. Have some pics from daughter Tiffs wreck last week. Everyone is fine and cant begin to state how blessed we feel that it all turned out ok. Tiff has shown to be a safe responsible driver but on this day she was the only one belted and her two friends werent. She lost control in a curve on a dirt road. Once it came around she panicked (inexperience, what can you say) and over corrected. Jeep swapped ends and left the road and turned over striking a tree actually across the hood and thrown back toward the road. Her two friends were thrown clear. She stayed in her seat. A trip to the hospital and one girl kept overnight for observation and everyones ok! With two people ejecting from the vehicle this could have been so much worse. This was only a couple miles from the house and she didnt push the seat belt issue.

Glad everybody was OK. Thats why I insisted my kids knew how to drive sideways in slides and reverses before I let them get licenses. I made them learn it so it became second nature. I had them practice spinouts on snow and ice and grassy fields.
One day, my son called and thanked me when he got cut off by a stupid driver while driving a semi. It jack knifed and he remembered what I'd taught him about that too. He downshifted and pointed the cab where he wanted to be and stood on the gas. It straighened and no damage incurred.
It's too late to learn when an incident occurs. There's no time to think about it during a 'mishap'.

I feel the same way and while my son could drive on about anything its a bit harder with her. From a yound age he, like most boys had no problem going into a slide. But she has never liked any kind of drifting or aggressive driving and now its come back to bite me.

On my daughters sixteenth birthday she insisted on getting her learners permit. One of the first lessons was sliding, spinning and stopping in the snow in a large parking lot. She learned on front wheel, rear wheel and four wheel drive. Many times she has thanked me for those lessons. Seems that none of her girlfriends fathers took the time to slip and slide in the snow. She has no fear of driving in inclement weather and can handle getting a little loose when it happens. I think it should be a required part of driver training for teens, make it part of the required skills building.

Tell her the definition of happiness is a perfectly executed '4-wheel drift'.:)

The four wheel drift was an eye opener for her, she expected a spin and didn't. After a while she got the hang of it.

I may have 'met' her one day.

Two idiots were blocking traffic at 65mph. I was in left lane and she was behind me, 4' back. Dude in left lane went into a decel lane and same time a real idiot pulled in front of me and didn't speed up. Ididot in r. lane slowed!

Guaranted wreck in l. lane. She swerved out as I did into and past the r. lane onto shoulder, her l. fender inches from my r. quarter. In unison, we cut in front of the idiot that pulled in front of us, barely missing him and idiot that slowed.
We went across the left lane as she did a Chitwood crossover behind me, and we flattracked through the median and snapped back onto the road. I drifted/fishtailed in front of the still slowing idiot to give her the l. lane. Seh fishtailed in unision with my fishtails in the l. lane and went on past with a slight wave.:) The whole thing lasted about 3-5 seconds, start to finish. There was no time to study it and think it through. Still fresh in my mind and still gives me shivers 5 years later.
BTW, when I looked at the speedometer, we were doing 60 as we straighened out.

I said 3-5 seconds. Wife said faster than she could blink. I guess it's a case of time standing still during an emergency.

We have surely tried to give her training far and above what most 16 yr olds go thru. Shes probably driven 3000 miles before she got her license. Thru atlanta traffic, into carolina, thru rains. Shown about hyroplaning. Drove my f350 pulling the dump trailer and how to control it if you go off the pavement. But I did know drifting was her one weak spot so I didnt say anything about the wreck. More my fault. Besides when you see that sort of thing and know it wasnt caused by playing your just happy shes ok. Definitly will be working more on her driving skills. We dont get enough snow here to help her on that one tho.

When my son turned sixteen he got his learners permit. Three weeks later we drove from NY to CA and back. By the time were back he had his fill of driving and lots of highway experience. By the time he got to drivers ed at school he already had his license. He got the same snow training however being a boy he took to it like a duck to water. So far the time spent at dads driving school has paid off. Been trying to convince him to get a CDL A license just to have something to fall back on while he is young and still not tied down with a family and all that entails. Having that CDL in your back pocket and a clean record almost guarantees work when you need it.

Used to be (maybe still is?) a 2-day youth driving school at Road Atlanta. They have a full wet skid pad, and students get to practice some real slide/skid skills! Not cheap, but way less than the potential alternative.
