Price of coffee What are you drinking.

The price is up because there was a crop failure in Central America. Sorry, no government conspiracy, just bad growing conditions.

I cut down my coffee input at work by buying a bigger cup! this sounds counter intuitive but it worked. Instead of the usual 8 ounce cup that I would drink rather fast because it was getting cold, I got a 16 ounce thermal insulating mug.
That mug would keep my coffee hot and warm for four hours. Then instead of drinking four cups (32 oz.) in the morning, I was drinking two (16 oz.).
The mug was the double wall vacuum type and I forget where I bought it.

But roasting your own beans is the way to go. Not only do you pay less for the beans, but you get to choose from the beans of many different worldwide locations. And your roasted beans are fresh roasted and ground, not roasted some ten months ago.

Of course there's the initial cost of the equipment to amortize but there's the satisfaction of really good coffee.

If you decide to roast, there's several appliances that you'll need. A roaster, burr grinder, and a scale that reads in grams (2 grams of grounds to one ounce of water is suggested). Then there's the brewer - a vacuum pot is best but a french press is nearly as good and is easier to use and clean.

One of my satisfactions is sneering at the housewives in the supermarket that are trying to decide on a coffee blend. I think that I'm getting much better coffee than them and I'm paying much less for it.

Where can you find it?

I have tried roasted dandelion root. Not bad!

I have been watching for sales, buying enough to get by for several months at a time. Starting to buy no name brands, but that is even higher then what I was paying just a couple years back for name brand. Keeps going the rate it is, I will be a X drinker of that also.

Walmart usually has it.

We bought one of those single cup makers. Pretty expensive, but it is about a 12 miles to the nearest coffee shop.

I've drank nothing but Folgers coffee since I was 14. Then about a year later decided to try some aldi brand as it is cheaper than the folgers coffee.

I made one pot with that aldi brand, drank one cup and was feeling like throwing up 20 minutes later. (Yuck)

That was the worst tasting coffee I have ever drank. I will gladly pay whatever folgers cost. It is the best tasting coffee too me. I love it.

My dad wouldn't even drink the aldi brand coffee, so we just poured it down the toilet.

Folgers all the way. It's worth the price too me and my dad.

Well the forum post awoke again.
Did anyone ever taste the Arbuckels coffee of when the West was being homesteaded?
Was it only in the bean or could it be purchased ground. The western book writers never mentioned the cowboy preparing his coffee doing any grinding. And always in a paper sack no tin to keep fresh.
Can just see a cowboy using his pistol to whack and wham the beans on a rock.
We grew up with Dad heating water on wood stove and a hand full of grounds put in water to boil until rolling for a couple of minutes. then a cup of cold water to "settle" the grounds. Strong and black some used condensed milk in can or sorgram syrup to sweeten .
And all the kids drank a cup before doing the chores in the morning when finished time for breakfast and get readay for school.
Still get up early and drink weaker coffee.

I'm something of a a coffee snob, but haven't hit the self-roasting point--yet.

I've bought coffee when it was still warm from the plant (in Guatemala) and other places in Central America where it was as fresh as can be. I've also had some really bad coffee. Having had both experiences, I'm willing to pay the price for decent coffee. I buy the beans and grind them for each batch.

Find a brand or supplier that gives you what you want consistently and deal with the price. Get your beans in a place with high turnover, age is always the biggest problem after the quality of the beans themselves.

Then about a year later

This was supposed to say. (Then about a year ago.) Not a year later. xd. I was tired when I wrote that. Think I needed me some coffee then.

Paramount Roasting in Lansing makes many boutique shop coffees in our area and also roasts BiggB coffee. I enjoy many of these blends.

My wife gets to Costco about every 8-10 weeks and stocks up, big time. Yes, my name is BP Fick and I am a coffee snob. Didn't intend to become one, but my taste buds grew to like better coffees through the decades and I can drink water just fine, which I would prefer to cheap coffee. Just can't drink them anymore. Doesn't make me electable nor more important than anyone else, it's just that life is short. Drink what pleases you.

I have a life-long addiction to coffee. Love the stuff. I like many kinds of storebought for occasional home use, but hit coffee shops when I can during the day. Here in Staunton, VA, we have "Lester's Coffee" - a custom blend by a local expert that is fantastic... But only for fans of really strong coffee. It is strong, but full of flavor. Wonderful in reg coffee, espresso coffee ... And at home of a morning with a French press.

My doc tells me coffee is not a vice, it's actually good for you in several ways. But he did have me cut back to just a half-dozen mugs a day.
