It goes like this, regarding belief:
We believe that if you don't believe what we believe the way we believe it then we believe we have to kill you.
Works for almost any group hating another.
Note to rob:
Of course I believe man is capable of changing things on earth. Small things up to really big things. Frequently in the name of making something better things are made worse. English sparrows imported to kill off some moth. They did and now we are inundated with sparrows. Exotic species in Hawaii wiping out indigenous species. Exotic pet snakes multiplying exponentially in the swamps of the southeast.
Nearly every time someone has tried to make things better they didn't. I am apprehensive regarding BIG expensive plans to make things better. Reducing pollution and deforestation are a couple areas where we could use some sanity before we poison ourselves even more.
Unfortunately the main problem is TOO MANY PEOPLE and we are wired to be fruitful and multiply so as to make it worse. With reasonable population densities we might have time to implement low impact gradual changes to improve our situation in an evolutionary instead of revolutionary high impact manner. Civil discourse on these topics is not a trivial undertaking for several reasons.
There will be a resolution of many of our problems, responsible and well planned or wrought by natural forces like famine, sickness, and war.
There is a humorous yachting concept called a spreader (not referring to rigging of a sailboat.) A person standing with one foot on the dock and one foot on the departing boat. Vocal protestations not withstanding the "spreader" will either end up on the boat, on the dock, or in the water. Non decision is a decision. Doing nothing is a choice but the outcomes are limited and no amount of shouting will effect a change beyond the three possible outcomes. Delay in making a decision is itself a decision leading to a limited set of outcomes.
