broken crankshaft?

The iron bar trick works, but a 3foot piece of water hose will too, like a stethoscope? I saw the water trick done years a go, by pouring it out of a small bottle..

same reason why a head gasket leak will leave that cyl steam cleaned...

Have used the pipe trick and the water for carbon. Transmission fluid works for sticking valves, can remember my father telling me to keep my 69 Coronet running while he poured a quart of transmission fluid into the carb, freed up the stuck valve, made a h#!! of a lot of toxic smoke though.

i was given a free mf 240 that stopped running and was taken to a dealer, the dealer told the guy it had a broken crank and wasnt worth the price it would take to repair. then they offered to buy it. that is how i recieved it the guy gave it to me on the condition that i could do anything i wanted with it just wasnt allowed to scrap it. the dealer wanted 3500 bucks to replace the crank. i called a machine shop and they said they would overhaul the engine completely for 1500-2000 i just had to bring them the engine with all the accessories removed. after reading this i am wondering if the crank is even broken. i didnt really buy it when i went to pick up the tractor. this is my first tractor and i dont know much about them but i do know v8's and i couldnt imagine what it would take to break a crank i would think alot of other things would break before a crank would break.

No idea about your tractor but mine, the MF 50 in question on this thread, turned out to have a bad rod bearing.

I ended up buying a MF 230 and sold the 50 to a local guy who likes to work on old Masseys.

I'm happy with my 230. Good luck to you. You should do okay considering the 240 was free.

As for the source of the sound, my money is on rod bearings.

No idea about your tractor but mine, the MF 50 in question on this thread, turned out to have a bad rod bearing.

So I was right? It's nice to know that my instincts about engines have not been dulled with age. My memory isn't what it used to be. :confused2:

The rod bearing was so badly damaged that the new owner wondered if the engine had been oil starved. He noticed that I had put on an adaptor that allowed for the use of a spin on filter rather than the original 'canister' type, and wondered if that adaptor had slowed the oil flow enough to cause the damage.

I think I got the adaptor from Yesterdays Tractor. No conclusive proof. Just wondering. The oil pressure was low but adequate (I thought) at around 10 lbs.

edited to ad that the crankshaft was ruined by the bad bearing.

Had a 2-155 White this spring that developed a low speed rumble, was quiet above 1500 RPM. Crank was broken just back of # 4 main web. Still had good oil pressure and no bearing damage. Replaced crank with one from a 6x6 military engine, could see a big diferrence in crank webs, military was much heavier built.

My tractor still has the original canister type oil filter and I considered going with one of the spin on adapters, but the one I looked at came with a Fram oil filter so I didn't buy it because Fram oil filters are junk right out of the box. Did yours by any chance have a Fram oil filter on it? Perhaps that was the cause.

10 i low for that engine.. I'd say it had a sun rod and that was why oil was low too..

I doubt the pin on adapter had anything to do with it.. the spin on media vs the canister media should not have drastically different flow rates. fords are converted from canister to spin on all the time.

the small special nut that connects the spin on, that replaces the one in the block that captured the center stem of the canister should have similar flow characteristics..
