Simplicity Broadmoor with Vanguard 18 HP V-Twin

My Simplicity has been running famously, now suddenly, barely runs and if you shut it down, forget it. Took air cleaner cover off, there's significant gas belching from the carburetor. Tank is about half full. When it runs, it's sounding rough, blows black smoke fairly often. Oil is at normal level. New spark plugs, new air cleaner, new battery.

It's been a while since it was in the shop, 2-3 years, maybe, purchased in 2005.

Engine model 356777, type 0113e1, code 04090211.

Any thoughts?

I can't help with your problems but I too had the 18hp Vangaurd in a 50" Broadmoor. Best mower I've ever had. Sadly I got a little slack on checking the oil and locked up the motor. I think it had just over 1000 hours on it.

The tractor has not been sitting, we've mowed several times this season.

By 'significant gas', I mean there's a 2-3 tablespoons that spill out after the engine shuts down or fails to start. Choke is operating correctly, not stuck shut.

Try a little sea foam, worked for my briggs and stratton 24 horse.

Bingo! Exactly right - a glob of dirt under the float needle keeping the needle from seating. I was amazed how large it was. I'm guessing you saved me about a $300 trip to the Simplicity shop and a week delay in cutting needing-to-be-cut-2-days-ago acre of grass. Thank you, mostly_gas!!
