Home Depot no longer giving daily 10% discounts on VA cards

LOWES EXPANDS SUPPORT OF THE MILITARY WITH YEAR-ROUND DISCOUNT

MOORESVILLE, N.C. Lowes Companies, Inc. announced today it will expand its support of the military by offering an all day, every day 10 percent discount to all military personnel who are active, reserve, retired or disabled veterans and their family members, with a valid, government-issued military ID card.



All other military veterans will receive the discount on the Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Veterans Day weekends.

Lowes also has screw-ups on the policy. I went in three days ago and the floor manager who has to approve the override says "are you active duty?' . I said, "I'm retired and here's my card, that is your policy". She said said she didn't think I qualified, but gave the approval. The day before my wife went in and showed her card and they just rang up the discount -- go figure...

The last thing I'd do is dump on a clerk for the boss's policy. I see folks locked into jobs they never liked but chained to it for survival. Store managers, business owners and government personnel suffer the slings and arrows of their policies because they're the ones who make it.

The discount is gracious - period.

As for Home Depot, Lowe's, Sears, Chevron, etc etc, we're surrounded. Be safe and make sure you have something white to wave when the time comes.

I think all kinds of discount programs are going way.

Learned last week Burger King has dropped the 10% senior discount now and went the McDonald route with $0.50 coffee, etc.

The entitlement mentality is growing each year in this country and often vote to enhance it.

As we announced earlier this year, we offer a year-round, 10 percent discount, up to a $500 maximum, at our U.S. stores to all active duty military personnel, reservists, retired or disabled veterans and their immediate families. We offer this discount to thank them for their outstanding service to this nation and to help make their homes more comfortable and safe. Customers requesting the discount should present a valid military ID.

In addition, a 10 percent discount is also offered in recognition of Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day and Veterans Day at all U.S. Home Depot stores for all other military veterans. So as a veteran, we invite you into our stores this weekend to take advantage of the discount.

Several recent comments bring up the same mistaken point, saying that the stores have changed their policies. The policies have not changed, but individual stores are certainly changing their behavior. The implementation of the policy at the store level has been lax since the discount program began. It has always been a Military discount all year round, and a Veterans discount several weekends a year. The companies have choosen to define Military roughly in line with the qualifications for a DoD issued military ID: active duty, National Guard or reserve or dependents, retired military and dependents, and disabled veterans. If you meet the eligibility as Military, then you qualify all year round. If you meet the eligibility as Veteran, then you qualify for the discount on the designated weekends.

Many stores have been generously giving the Military discount to Veterans for several years. They have been gradually trying to return to the clearly stated policy. I actually feel badly for these stores who are trying to do something nice and are getting bashed for it.

Here in Jax (a military town) the stores still give the discount year round to a large assortment of military id, which include your VA card. It is done by store manager discretion.

Home depot will give you a discount 365 days a year if you tell them you want the " LOEWS DISCOUNT" ...sort of a secret discount thing the cashier told me.
I think it's 10% what ever it is I use it all the time and it's enough to buy me lunch most days.

We're talking about a discount here, not an entitlement. They are not the same in my opinion. If the stores want to give a discount - thanks, it's appreciated and I will probably spend MY money at your store in recognition of YOUR appreciation. If you don't, it doesn't mean I won't shop there if you have what I want, but I'm less likely to drive extra miles if I can get it closer.

An entitlement is MY money being given to you because some government body saw it was (in their opinion or as a result of whomever they think they represent) something you had a right to. I won't comment on entitlements as they like everything else to do with society range from the absolutely ridiculous to the absolutely deserved. You can't lump them into a general category.

That can work at O'Reilly's I learned on a Saturday when I needed 12' of large hydraulic hoses made up. The quote dropped by 45% when I said I would get back with them on Monday after NAPA opened.

While I think I am entitled to all discounts I know not everyone behind me likes to pay more so the business can afford my discount. Discounts will impact my eating decisions some days. Culver's food good but expensive and there is not tipping there so their 5% discount vs. Burger King at 0%next door now.

Discounts are great and so are coupons. It makes think about the "early out" discount/coupon the Seabees offered for guys that had already made a first tour overseas...ahh, I guess I made the right decision - even though there was no trip to Disneyland.
