Need help with JD316 model year and fuel pump/part numbers

Hey rtp,
Glad you're making some progress on this thing.
Most online places will have the parts for the exact same price as the dealer down the street. You might find a place that is slightly cheaper, but not by much. Believe me,I just put a ton of parts on my '86 316.
I've used the Onan site for quite a few parts and they are definitely cheaper than going through JD. You can email them and they will verify which part is correct for your application.

Well, the good news and the bad news.
Good news - dealer had the pump in stock, $96.
Bad news - started at the same pump can be had for $72 online, dealer wouldn't budge on price, looks like most future parts purchases will be online whenever possible. I didn't expect them to match, but as far as I've seen, retail is < their price. :-/

More bad news: Behavior was pretty odd. Pulled the old fuel pump, put in the new. The old pump blew through without resistance. The new pump with minor mouth pressure felt like it had resistance, presumably the diaphragm, so it gave me some hope. Put it back together, primed with a bit of starter fluid, fired right up, but - no fuel. :-/ (visually, in inline fuel filter). Repeat a few times, no change. #^##&

Pulled inlet line to tank, blew into it, seemed clear..with a full tank of gas, blew into it, when I stopped blowing, seems like I built up some (very) minor pressure in the tank, felt some come back once I released the line. That would seem to indicate to me it's unlikely to have a line split anywhere at the very least. Put it back on the pump, pulled the outlet line, sat on it and cranked - *very* little fuel was pumping, like several engine revolutions then a 'spurt' of fuel, definitely not at all a steady stream. Was ready to call it quits, the it started running on the last attempt; I thought maybe I'd managed to flood it previously by dumping gas down the carb throat.

Somewhat oddly - I believe the engine suffers from the intake leak, as it always ran a bit rough, running best with partial choke on. Now it was running seemingly well with no choke, let it run for a while in the garage, seemed OK (surprisingly), so backed it out of the garage. Ran fine, then stalled.

30 minutes later, it's in the same place. I'm not sure what's going on here, but am hitting a time and patience limit while the grass is hitting all time highs.

Thoughts? Can someone confirm normal fuel pump behavior on these engines, e.g. very small spurts vs constant flow?

sounds like maybe you need to check out the line behind the fuel pump that connects to the crank case. maybe you accidentally unplugged it from the crankcase while swapping pumps

There's tension on that line at this time. Anyone have a list of everything that needs to come off to access it? GLC seemed to indicate the engine coming out if a 'plastic piece' needs replacement, presumably at the end of that line. Does anyone have a PN for that so I might luck out and get a diagram or picture somewhere that isn't shown in the JD tech manual?

Hi rtp,
I don't know where you are getting "plastic piece".
There is a piece of fuel line that connects to the back of the fuel pump which is pretty much inside the fan shroud. The other end connects to a barbed fitting (which is metal) that is attached to the engine block.

glc, sorry, I'm referring to post #4 in this thread..plastic piece related to the governor..any chance of a PN?

rtp,
You can see the hose in this pic. It doesn't actually go into the governor housing, just the fitting, which probably is OK. There isn't a PN as far as I know.

Wow, I forgot to update on this one.

To save anyone the hassle I ran into, and maybe save them a few $....it wasn't the fuel pump. If you chase the fuel line all the way back to the tank, it has a funky grommet stack of sorts pressed into the plastic tank, with a line that drops inside the tank.

Basically, the inside the tank part of the line feel apart. I wound up making something and she's off and running. Yeah, with a new $$$ fuel pump as well. Oops.

Hey rtp, glad you located the problem. While you mentioned your pickup inside the tank,I'll mention it's not a bad idea to add the JD fuel pickup (AM52039) which is a little check valve that keeps the fuel from draining back into the tank.
Have you noticed when the tractor sits for a few days it cranks for a while before it fires? Mine did that which was very annoying,I put the valve in and couldn't believe how quick it fires up now.:)

Hi Greg,

I wish I had some pictures, as it was fixed close to the last post, so 'a little while ago' ;) From memory, it was *not* terribly easy to actually get the pieces snapped back into the tank itself - I think I actually wound up relocating it to an alternate tank plug.

You're right - it does take a few second of cranking after sitting, and it makes sense the fuel line has just drained back into the tank - I'd assume the check valve can be placed anywhere in the line, as after that, I'm *not* looking forward to pulling that back out of the tank again. ;)

PS - for a chuckle, see my new post up above on the deck. I think my JD is telling me it's time to pull it apart for a winter project. ;)
