Double acting valve: Moving the lever in one direction supplies oil from the pump to the rod end to retract the cylinder. Moving the lever in the opposite direction supplies oil from the pump to the cap end of the cylinder.

Float detent: Has the same features as the double acting acting valve with the addition of a fourth position that requires you to push the lever past a spring loaded detent to get to "Float" and usually also locks the spool in this position. Float connects both cylinder ports to tank so the cylinder can "Float" depending on the external forces being applied to it.

Ah. Thanks.

Is one preferred over the other? Kubota gives the option...

For using a FEL the float is a nice feature. Allows you to back drag to level surfaces. Some people use it for plowing snow also. Allows the bucket to follow the ground with you the operator having to make corrections constantly.

A float detent is nice on a rear remote for use with a hydraulic top link. The float position can help a lot when grading with a box blade.
