It won't hurt you, but will turn permed hair some unusual colours. If it is manganese, and is floating on top, you can separate it with a stick or something like that. Oil would just keep spreading, manganese won't since it's a mineral.

Mind you, if I'm wrong and it is something toxic, you're taking your chances.

I really feel better now.... Laughing.... Is there a cheap way to test this?

Just don't drink the water. Magnesium is a common property of most laxatives :)

is this the face of your dirt dam that the water is sepping out of? If so I think I would be worried of the dam weaking more than what is in it!

Great, just what I need... Do they make something to test the water that won't cost me an arm and leg?

It is the dirt dam but it hasn't changed any since last summer. There spots are soft. The tractor would sink in a foot if I tried to drive over it. I will take more pictures tomorrow so you can get a better perspective of the whole thing.

Contact your County Extension Ag office. They should have kits available for testing or can point you to a cheap lab in the area. Magnesium and calcium are common elements that create hard water conditions. Testing irrigation water for water hardness is a pretty common request in ag communities. They also have the ability to soil test, which would include magnesium. Both of these tests are pretty cheap - thinking less than $25.

Your local extension office is a wealth of knowledge and free to cheap help with things like this.

Hmmm not good. Water should not be seeping thru the dam nor should there be soft spots. IMO it's only a matter of time (likely sooner rather than later) before the dam fails.

You can get a water test that isn't very expensive to determine the mineral causing the coloration. When we moved to our current home with pond, we had test with National Testing Labs. in Cleveland. Cost of test was $119. That was 12 years ago so probably more now.

Like posted above, I'd be more concerned with the fact that it is seeping through your dam, than what it looks like or what it contains...

I'd get the original dam builder back out there and have him look at the condition -- sounds like you need a lot of Bentonite, at the very least, and perhaps draining the pond and relining the dam with clay. You say the soil is clay -- there may be so many stones in one spot that the water has found a path through the maze of stones.

In any case, it needs looked at, sooner rather than later...

Lets not mix up our elements here. Manganese is not magnesium...

Good catch dstig1!

IPhone screen without my glasses. Very true - two very different elements. Let's HOPE it's not manganese. You sure wouldn't want to drink that water. Nevertheless, your extension agent should be able to help you! Good luck!
