Winch saved the day ( or a long walk )

Warn winch on the 1100 sure proved to be a great option. Touring adjacent to the pond my son, dog, and I found an overflow area without a bottom. Not counting muddy shoes for hooking up the rest was a breeze. The winch dragged us 40 plus feet in an area that was dry last year. I could not believe the power and durability of the 1/4" cable as it sucked us through a bottomless muck area covered with vegitation looking as solid as a road. It rewound just as nice as it was stored ready for the next adventure ( ?? ). At first I thought it was a mere decoration. Now I know I can depend on it.

Glad to see it all worked out okay. I just bought a UTV that replaced my ATV and I am going to buy a winch for it. The UTV is much heavier than an ATV and would virtually be impossible to muscle out of a mud hole..

1/4" cable scares me to death. Small enough to break, big enough to cut you in two.

I don't use my Warn winch that much but it sure gives me a lot more confidence when I go through the mean stuff. It's worth it for the peace of mind. When my aircraft wire cable wore out I replaced it with this stuff. I like it a lot better than the steel cable and it seems to last a lot longer:

I have a Warn RT40 on my Kawasaki 3010 Trans Diesel Mule-sunk it to the axles in a bog and as rsewill duly noted, that wire was as tight as a guitar string-I had a tree to hide behind while working the winch's remote control and when the Mule pulled lose, it jumped up about three feet out of that bog. Steel cable, especially well used steel cable is scary stuff. I will soon replace it with synthetic rope as it eliminates the recoil/whiplash of steel cable.

Yes a winch comes in handy! I've used the winch on the Gator for a vareity of projects.

a winch is a must hae on any atv/utv even tractor . you never know what your gonna need it for .and also carry a few straps . i got stuck one time but lucky for me i always carried atleast 200' of straps and it took all the straps and darn near all the cable on the winch to reach a tree.

I also strongly agree that all need an ATV winch. I was on a day long ride a couple of weeks ago,prior to this trip I hadn't even come close to getting my Polaris stuck since I have had it. That day I got horribly stuck three times in about 200'. If the people I was riding with had not had winch's I am pretty sure I would still be there.
The very next day I went out and bought a 3500' winch, I may never have to use it ,but without i,t I would never go on another long ride through the bush........Craig

Thanks for posting this link. I've been looking for an adequate replacement for cable. I will definitely look closer at this product and attempt to locate local distributors.

Another good cheap alternative is a comealong.You can also add cable or good rope and get yourself out of a mess.Dun it many a time.Just get off atv when cranking and be patient comes out in slow increments.One thing I like about the comealong method is you can hook it to front/rear/side whatever.Even though there are some winch set up now a days you can hook up to front or rear I believe.
