Your JD shop manual should have good proceedures to follow to narrow down the problem. You may want to start by removing the fuel cap and peering inside to see if the float arm has come loose? The side of the tank should have a variable resistor, reostat electric sender unit that moves with the arm/float going up and down. I believe if you unplug the electric plug on the tank sender and put a volt/ohm on resistance when you gently push the float/arm down the meter should change resistance reading if the sender is good. Change the volt/ohm to DC about 100v and check to see if you have current/volts on the elec plug before you plug it back into the sender unit, when you turn the engine on. Did you check fuses?
