Hey all,

Im going crazy trying to get this light to work. All of my dashboard lights power up except the overheat light. I have replaced the sending unit as it was broken and have put it all back together. I have a 12V light test connected to the ground terminal on the battery and the positive side of the light test connected to the light bulb socket and i am getting power, but when i put in a light bulb i get nothing.

I have checked for power at the connection point at the sending unit trying to ground it out and i still get no light?

what gives?

If I understand the system correctly, battery voltage/current goes to the ignition switch, then to the light, then to the temperature sending unit. When the unit gets hot enough the unit will switch on, grounding the light completing the circuit. The light will illuminate.

If you have voltage showing up at the sending unit, and ground that the light should come on, right? If it doesn't there must be a big resistance (corrosion) someplace. Enough resistance to keep the current flowing through the bulb. Your test light is probably neon or led bulb, and it draws very little current. The dash bulb is a regular filament bulb and draws more current.

I would first start by checking the battery connections, both negative and positive. Then the wire connector on the sending unit. Then work my way up and down the line. My 2 cents worth of knowledge is saying you have a dirty, corroded connection someplace. Maybe a plug somewhere? Could the wire have been damaged when the sending unit was broken?

Make sure the bulb contacts the socket. Not sure what kind you have but quite often the center contact does not touch the bulb.:)

I had the same issue on my tractor, and on mine I though that the same warning light was suppose to come on when I turned the ignition, but had not started the tractor, so I changed the bulb, and then the light fixture, an then I later learned the the light will only come on when there is an issue, and never any other time. I am not sure if that is the same issue, but you may want to look into it. I would at least call a JD dealer. I started my grandfathers 950 the other day, and I don't think that the temp light was illuminated, when the others were on. Not 100% sure, but worth looking into, it may be allright.. You could also remove the bulb, and try it in a light that does work, and see if it lights up.

The temperature light should come on when the key is in the Start position. A momentary ground is applied during Start for the purpose of testing the bulb.

any tips to help trouble shoot where my problem is?

Just to clarify should the light come on in the RUN position or STARTING/CRANKING position.

BATTERY
OFF
IGNITION/POWER
STARTING/CRANKING

Thats good to know for the JD trouble light, I will also have to check my 950. Sorry, I didn't want to give you bad information, my tractor is a bit different, but now I have to check our green tractor! Thanks!, and I hope that it works out well for you. I used a circuit tester by touching the positive (red) to the bulb outlet with the bulb out, and the negative (black)grounded to the tractor, or to the warning light ground. You may just have a bad ground. If you don't have one of these test light, you can get one at Walmart, or just about any hardware store for under $10.

The temp. light does not come on in the on position as does the oil and battery light. You should see it light momentarily only when cranking, unless overheating of course (230 degrees I think). Flickers quick, so you have to look right at it.
