That is a lot of metal and the color is darker than it should be. Hope your warranty is good because something bad is going on there.

This was at 50 hour on mine. About the same as smalltown color wise.
megaboz,yours does seem to be really dark. Maybe you should get it checked if the warranty is still valid.

Well since getting the jd fluid out of it, it is running much better now. I believe the dark fluid is a result of it getting too hot.

We will see how the new fluid performs after the next flush.

I would love to take it to JD but they would just tell me that unless it isn't working there is nothing to do.

Mostly I just wanted to warn those newbies not to skip cleaning that strainer and to maybe consider changing tranny fluid a bit sooner the first 50 hour interval. I only waited because I had been trying to get the power beyond kit installed for a year now and didn't want them to contaminate my fluid with their JD stuff.

it has 70 hrs on the machine and NOT JD fluid? What fluid were you using? Why did you change it?
There IS going to be some metal in the filter at first. that amount in the screen doesn't necessarily mean anything. it could be normal for your machine during break-in.

No it had the JD fluid in it, I was changing duty to the 50 hour recommended first time interval.

It no longer had the JD fluid in it, really doesn't matter, I'm sure the fluid wasn't the cause.

As for shavings I agree that some is to be expected. But in my case I had chunks the size of peas, kind of looked like burrs from the matching process.

Somewhere I read where some owners were thinking about changing their fluid but not cleaning the screen. Just wanted to express that one shouldn't take short cuts when changing the hydraulic fluid.

I don't want to start another discussion but does anyone know where the housings are made? I have heard that certain manufacturers are not real religious about cleaning housings after the machining process.

I just got a 5085M with 20 hours on it so far. According to the Maintenance Manual, I should not change my transmission/hydraulic oil and filter for the first time until I hit 600 hours, and then every 600 hours after that.

I don't believe mine has a screen. After seeing these pics, I might have to at least check things out well before I hit 600 hours years from now... I suppose the larger frame JDs are engineered completely differently, but still. I think 600 hours is way too long before the first hydraulic oil & filter change!

That is because your 5085M has a gear transmission & not the hydrostatic one that the sub compacts have.

Very true, but my gear transmission shares oil with the rest of the hydraulic system. Does a hydro tranny really put that much additional wear on the hydraulic system? My LT166 riding mover has a sealed for life hydro tranny. Of course it is no where near as heavy as a CUT.

Hydrostatics put higher demands on the oil but nothing that would cause the kind of debris that is showing up your guys machines. I bet it is contamination from the manufacturing process that was not cleaned out. If not then your machines are going to check out long before their time.
