Tractor
lots including Kubota B's, L's, cat, etc.. over many years
Probably a way to over thought of a question but looking for advice from the experts please.

I have a Kubota B2620 hst tractor. Almost at the 50 hour mark. I changed out the engine oil and filter at 25 hours with Rotella. All is good. Run s perfect. Uses no oil.

MANUAL reads for low sulfur fuel I should use CF, CF-4, CG-4, CH-4, CI-4 AND THEN SAYS BELOW THESE OPTION: THE CJ-4 ENGINE OIL IS INTENDED FOR DPF (DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER) TYPE ENGINES, AND CANNOT BE USED IN THIS TRACTOR.

The Rotella is rated as API: CJ-4, CI-4 +, CI-4, CH-4, CG-4, CF-4, CF

So without a thought I assumed the Rotella is fine but now seeing the Kubota warning (that I highlighted in red has me outhinking myself.

any thoughts from the experts?

thanks
Bill

A "Search" will show you something about this and I'm not an expert. I use the Kubota branded oil (10W-30) year round, especially while the new tractor is under warranty. Some members will probably say that any oil that meets the Kubota specification is good to go however. The complexity of the DPF oil question, I can't answer. Cheers Mike

I always understood that a new API rating is more stringent than the previous, so new rating is always good for any previous rated application. I'd guess something was lost translating the manual from Japanese to English, but I can't imagine what they would be trying to say. Might call your dealer just to see what they say.

My thoughts as well.

API institute says new oils (CJ-4) downward compatible with older oils. In other words use the newest / latest and greatest and all will be OK.

Kubota on the other hand gives warning that CJ-4 not intended for DPF type engines and SHOULD NOT BE USED.

Rotella T (Shell) says good for CJ-4 PLUS CI-4 +, CI-4, CH-4, CG-4, CF-4, CF.

So Shell and API says all is good... Kubota has a warning.??

+3 on API oils

Kubota's factory fill is 10W30.I was using Kubota 10W30,but am switching to Rotella 10W30.An excellent product with a robust additive package.Better oil than we need since we don't have particulate filters or urea injection(DEF-diesel exhaust fluid)-coming soon!Lighter weight oils have become more popular for less parasitic power loss and quicker lubrication at startup. In my northern climate,I'm sold on 10W30 for compact tractors.Good Luck!

Check this statement by Shell:

Can I use Shell’s API CJ-4 engine oils for my offhighway
equipment?

Yes. Shell’s API CJ-4 heavy-duty engine oils are designed to
be suitable for use in off-highway equipment of all ages.
Some concern has been voiced that the higher fuel sulphur
levels encountered in off-highway applications may require
the continued use of API CI-4 PLUS oils. This is not true:
In2007, the fuel sulphur levels for off-highway equipment
will be reduced to 500 parts per million (ppm) – the same
as today’s on-highway standard. Shell has demonstrated the
performance and suitability of our API CJ-4 oils in millions of
miles of testing using conventional <500 ppm sulphur fuel.
Operators of off-highway equipment who also have
on-highway trucks can benefit from the convenience of one
oil for virtually all applications. Some marketers will be
converting all of their diesel production and distribution to
ULSD (<15 ppm sulphur), so the availability of >500 ppm
sulphur fuel for off-highway equipment may be more limited
as the industry protects the integrity of the road transport pool
and prepares for the off-highway conversion in mid 2007. The
use of API CJ-4 oils and/or lower sulphur diesel fuels presents
the opportunity to re-evaluate off-highway maintenance
practices for optimized oil drain intervals

I love it when there's a clear answer to a question, usually it's all mumbo jumbo.
