New Holland TC40D HST 4WD FEL/BH
We bought our New Holland TC40D HST 4WD used and I was wondering what the recommended, if any, RPM reading should be to have the tractor work most effectively.

Is that a Romulan bird of prey in your avatar? nice! I give you my personal 2 cents. It depends on the application and type of transmission you have. If I'm using a rotary cutter and want to run it as specified pto/cutter rpm of 540 then I have to run the engine at a rpm to achieve that. with my tractor it is around 2500. on some other rig between 2500-2800 rpm ..give or take some. A lot of time my task does not require 540 rpm and I run my rig for the RPM required for the task when engine is not logging and comfortably do the work. HST is a bit different as you need to maintain rated rpm to get the rated flow of the hst pump/motor combination.

For HST most efficient rpm is the rated rpm (2500-2800)

I have a NH TC30. I do it by sound but 1200/1300 is a good idle speed, 1500 is a good moving speed, 1800 is a good working speed, 2000 good for heavy work (FEL gravel). I bush hog at 2000 (really could do it at 1500 if I want to- though tractor emblem says 2400). Mine is a 9x3 manual, so it may be different than an HST. Your owners manual might have some suggestions. It also changes by 2 or 4 wheel drive and terrain. If it hesitates or feels weak- give it more gas(diesel). These are pretty tough tractors.

I have a TC40D.

- If you are running the PTO(I have rotary mower, PTO Chipper) and the implement needs 540 pto rpm, then you will be around 2500-2600 rpm. The pto light, and the "540rpm" light should go on.

- The rest, as another poster mentioned, I do by ear and feel. If it is lugging, then I give it some rpm. Most everything I do(besides pto use) is 1500-2200 rpm.

Have you used a HST before? Remember, it is not like a gas pedal; if you start to lug, let up on the HST a little, and maybe give it a little more throttle too. Pushing harder on an HST is kind of like shifting to a higher gear on a standard tranny...

I would say, get a manual, cause it has all the useful info on the tractor. I just looked in my manual; it does not give much useful info on the HST and rpm...
