Triple digit weather.

The heat index was 114F here today. On days like this, I try to focus on indoor projects unless there is a real emergency job outdoors. Got a lot done. If this heat keeps up, I may finally finish off our bonus room over the garage! I already decided I will buy some sheetrock and have it on hand so I can work on that room little by little on rainy days. Now I can add nuclear hot days onto the schedule too.

I'm a little further south and its been bruttal here. It's the hottest I ever remember. The Rome, GA newspaper was giving 107* the other day but the highest I actually seen my thermometer was 102*. It seems like their's was closer to right than mine.

I've slowed down my tractoring to the bare neccesities. No playing in this heat.

Here's a snip from the local paper: Here's a snip from the closest town with a new paper, about 10 miles from where I live: RN-T.com - Rome sizzles at 107 degrees

I milled stumps all day. I rented the machine, had reserved it weeks ago and scheduled the time for me to do it. Just haven't figured out how to schedule decent weather. :D I think we topped out right at 100* + whatever the humidity added, I don't recall looking to see where it was.

That is one reason, and an excellent example of why, I bought my little backhoe. When renting, weather may overcome you.

As far as the heat it was cold here (northeast Mississippi) today, only 96 degrees. Lot better than the 104 midweek. I worked in my non-airconditioned shops and the temps didn't get much above 92 all day :)

The ONLY thing I did outside today was go get takeout for supper so we didn't get the kitchen hot cooking. 108... Way to hot to do anything, especially with our humidity!!!

Today is supposed to be the last triple digit day with a "cold" front coming thru. Next weeks highs upper 80's / low 90's. I will take that!! Now if only we get some rain tonight....

I went out today and mowed with the DR. It hit 100 before the wifey put the thermometer in the house to wash off the porch. I would have skipped mowing but we have an appraiser showing up on Monday for our ReFi. This was the first time I have mowed all season so the grass was a bit on the long side. lol The temps are supposed to drop into the low 80s in a few days so I would have waited.

I drank plenty of water and juice and ate quite a few handfuls of peanuts. I put a ice pack in a wet towel around my neck and then put one or two more wet towels around the ice pack towel. Keeping the heat off your head/neck can do wonders. I still had to stop every hour or so to get out of the sun to drink water/juice and eat peanuts. Peanuts have fat, protein, and lots of Pottasium which your body needs. The shower felt REAL good!

Feel very sorry for those people still without power in this heat.

Later,
Dan

I'm with you on the wet towel thing. I'm sure it doesn't actually make a big difference in the body temp but it sure does make it more tolerable somehow or another.
I use that and a huge wide brimmed straw hat, white shirt and sun glasses. Makes it seem cooler anyway.

This is what I use when we have hot :fire:days here.
The neck wrap (also sold as The Neck Buddy) is made of polyester and cotton and is filled with poly-crystals. By simply placing the neck wrap in clean water for approximately 30 minutes and allowing the crystals to expand, it produces an evaporative cooling system for the user when placed around the neck.

The Cobber Body Cooling Neck Wrap lowers the body temperature by cooling the carotid arteries in the neck. The material may become warm against the skin but by simply rotating the wrap, the cooling effect is rejuvenated immediately!

So doing things like ice in a towel around the neck is a good way to help stay cool and safe on those hot days.

I worked in the shed today doing some mower maintenance. It sure was hot. My shirt was dripping wet and I wasn't even exerting myself. I should have drank more water because I got a little light-headed a few times. My thermometer only read 96 but the humidity made it much worse. We had a TS roll thru about 3pm. Thought it might cool things down a little but it only made the humidity worse. It's supposed to cool down to the high 80's / low 90's tomorrow - woohoo!

I'm worried for my kid. Just 6 months old. The weather was never like this for me growing up.

Not being at the mercy of a scheduled rent is why I prefer to own equipment as well. But considering how many stumps I need to mill down (plenty I could, but really don't find it that important to do so), I would be rather foolish to spend money on that particular piece of equipment.

Right now anyway. Once I have a larger tractor, I may change my tune slightly.
