Small engine oil vs regular oil

For some reason that trips up some.

Actually, the 5W-40 provides superior protection both in low temperatures and high.

It has to do with the way multi-grade oils are made and something called the "Weissenberg Effect". The analysis is complicated, but multi-grade oils generate a force which tends to keep crankshaft and piston rod bearings centered under use. Single weight oils do not do this. The larger the difference in the two weights rated, the larger is this effect.

I just bought another EU2000 Honda generator to have around after our power went off this weekend..

I have been using regular Amsoil 10w30 (ASL model) oil in my small engines (generator and push mower)..

What is the difference between a 10w30/30 'small engine' oil and a regular 10w30?

Looking on the amsoil website the regular 10w30 has a higher TBN rating than the 'small engine' 10w30/30

just curious

Brian

Amsoil advised me that their "10W30 Small Engine Oil" has a Phosphorus content of 1314 ppm and a Zinc content of 1437 ppm. This exceeds the amount of metals allowed for todays automotive engines (for environmental regulations). The metals are important as they reduce engine wear. Unless you use some specialty oil for racing etc., the standard gas and diesel engine oils offered totday at retail stores have 1000 ppm or less (???) metal content.

So how exactly do you hook up a second tank to portable generator to extend the run time? (I have no experience doing this but would like to).

Thanks, DEWFPO

First off this only works with the Honda EU and Yamaha inverter generators to my knowledge. These have a fuel pump to draw the fuel from the tank

you can buy a tank ready to go OR make your own using some of the boating fuel quick connection, some fuel line, a boat tank AND a modified gas cap for the generator..

The cost of the boat tanks has gone up a LOT in the last few years, mainly due to new California regulations I believe..

Here are a couple links to make your own and links to the fuel caps.. I would recommend buying a ready to go fuel cap instead of trying to modify one - i never got my modified one air tight so it wouldnt draw from the tank

Link to a single ready to use tank BERGS 6 gal System for Honda, ETQ, Generac, All Power WiseSales.com

Link to the a ready to go gas cap, you just need to add a 3/8" bard or a boat quick connection Honda EU1/EU2 Ext Run Gas Cap WiseSales.com

Any gas tank that is vented through the cap can be modified with a boat gas tank or similar.

I knew a got that ran a Ford 8N powering a generator using a 500 gallon farm tank on a stand. Just bypasses the tractor tank and plumed it to the carb through a filter.

Not sure how this fits in with the newer engines, but I always was told and read that multi viscocity oils were bad for an air cooled engine as the air cooled engines run at a higher temp then what the multi viscocity additives could handle and the oil thickness breaks down at warm to hot ambient enviroments.

Also have a Generac 20KW unit and when other then the straight 30w is used oil consumption increases greatly. So I wonder how things have changed or are they just recommending the new oils for fuel economy reasons??

In the owners manual for my EU2000 - it specifically recommended a 10w30 automotive oil for 'general use' with a spec of 'SJ' or later.. Maybe in years past it was an issue OR maybe it varies between mfg's.

FYI for those having EU generators - the Honda OEM gas cap fill fit 5 gal and 2 gal Blitz fuel cans..

you can add a barb (with enough fuel hose to reach the bottom of the fuel can) and boat fuel connection to the cap and make an extended fuel tank from any Blitz gas can you have around

I am wondering if I need to drill a few holes in the cap so that it can vent, since new gas cans arent vented
