Just checking in. 66 here, maybe going to 90. After the 100+ days we had, 90 seems ok. I have some mulch being delivered to the shop. I need to show them where to dump it. Have a good one, be safe guys!

07-13-2012 Currently 72 degrees. High of 84 expected. A buddy of mine removed 7 stumps for me 2 weeks ago, and I put 35 pounds of fescue seed out yesterday covered by 5 bales of straw on these areas and other areas that had been cleared. Rain is in the forecast later this evening. I sincerely hope so. BTW, I just realized that today is Friday the 13th.:D

Morning all,

t-stat says it is 70 outside. Online weather says 66... I'm thinking about going to the fair tonight an spending way too much money on some rinkydink rides with the kids.

TSC called yesterday and my PHD is in.

Yesterday morning when I went to help the girls with feeding the birds we discovered a horrid racoon/mink/rat attack on our baby guineas... very little left... I'm considering poison... I was so disgusted and angry... and they were inside a fully enclosed chicken wire and reinforced cage too... Grrrr...I think I'm riding to work againa today.

Be well all of you!
David

David, it could be a mink, they will kill everything. Years ago we lost over 30 egg laying chickens in one night. The mink basically go on a killing frenzy. I have had to deal with 6 mink over the past few years. One I had to deal with in hand to hand combat using a pitch fork in the chicken coop.

87 and sun. Looks like this trend will continue for a number of days.

71 here @ 09:00 .... looks to be largely overcast ....

We had shower and thunderstorms all around us yesterday .... but nary a drop right here .... they are calling for the possibility of shower later tonight ....

The well guys came out and bailed the well yesterday .... that ended up being a mixed bag .... there wasn't a lot of iron sediment in the bottom of the well - he hit hard bottom with the bailer pretty much straight out of the gate. I think he ran the bailer down only twice (three ?) .... and it was coming up pretty clean .... although the pump intake screen was partially covered (50% or better) with iron and/or shale ....

Guy felt that the pump itself (not the motor) was probably toast (from sucking shale) .... and that replacing it would handle the problem (flow/pressure drops off significantly with sustained use) .... so I had him replace it (pump only) .... but not before I asked about cleaning/rebuilding it. He basically said it wasn't worth the time/trouble.

Tested it out (after replacement) by opening up a garden hose and letting it run ..... and I'd say it may have actually made the problem worse .... probably because the pump inlet was no longer restricted ....

We were letting it run .... and the pressure dropped way off after about 10 minutes .... at around 15 minutes his helper who was standing by the open well casing reported that he could hear the pump sucking air intermittently ....

My guess is that due to lack of rainfall, the aquifer is way down and is just slow to recharge. We were down over 4.5 inches as of early/mid June ..... probably even more now ....

I think he said that the well depth was only 108' ....

In hindsight I should have had him continue to bail it - 4 or 5 times may have shown up the well's slowness in recharging when the bailer came up not completely full .... probably also should have demonstrated the problem with a water hose before I let them pull the pump.

I really should thoroughly test it by doing a prolonged bucket fill test .... to see exactly what it's doing.

I kept the pump (it's a Gould and not all that old) .... will check into getting a rebuild kit for it if one is available.

David, it could be a mink, they will kill everything...

Mouse,

So far all I have had hand-to-hand with inside the coop is the 6 black snakes I've killed so far...
Taking on a Mink with a pitchfork... You're THE MAN!

I am pretty sure it is the same 'coon that ripped wings off of my duck and the pullet. Thay got ahold of the keet through 1" chicken wire and everything that would fit through that size hole was gone... the other 2 were terrorized but alive. We moved them in with the larger birds into the "Chikn Shak"...

I've had it with the varmints.
I will show no mercy ever again to any of them...
