Cast Iron or Plastic guttering ?

What do you guys prefer ?

We used to have the original Cast Iron guttering which was fitted to the house over 60 years ago, but it eventually corroded bad enough to be leaking in several spots last year so we had to get it replaced with plastic as cast was too expensive.

Long story short, are there any downsides to plastic guttering opposed to spending the money on good solid iron ?

Hail can pretty much destroy it after it has been out in the sun for a few years.

Aluminium or Colourbond would be the choice in Australia

I thought most gutters were made out of aluminum?

The range of materials I believe is Aluminium , Cast iron , Colourbond , Copper , Galvanised tin and Plastic also in the old days even lead was used.
I think the Romans used Terracotta

I have never seen any cast iron gutter. I cannot imagine how heavy it would be. Can you post some pics?

I think we have a terminology issue...
Most Americans think of "gutters" as rain spouts (off the end of a roof) and gutters. I believe the wee laddie from Scotland is thinking of something else. Maybe he can clarify for us.

Old houses in St. Louis were indeed built with cast iron gutters. Have seen them wear out on lower side due to friction of sand from shingles and water. Not sure if you could find vendor to replace with cast iron or not.
