Lowes/Home Depot vs. small local stores - recent experience

At my HD the personnel are right on the spot to offer help, but not knowledgeable . I ask my question . 9 times out of 10 their reply is, " I 'm not sure let get someone that knows " . They disappear to a different aisle never to be seen again and no other person shows up to help .

My Lowes has terrible quality lumber if they have what I want at all . And their employees are just like the HD . Funny they are within blocks of each other, but seem to have decided not to compete with each other .

All my local lumber houses are way over priced and it takes along time to get a turn to order at the counter . If you are not a regular customer or a big contractor they can 't be too bothered . The mom and pop place with good prices and service were driven out of business years ago .

I ditto everything you posted...it applies here in my area as well....same thing...all the really good mom & pop merchants were driven out...now with the big guys...I have the same experience and the independents here are as you say...and here they are really arrogant as well, almost like they are doing he customer a favor...

This is slightly off track, but has anyone visited a Menards? Similar to HD/Lowes, just not as widespread across the country. From what I hear they have excellent customer service/products, but I have yet to visit one. There is one just down the road from me that opened up, might have to go check it out.

I went to one in Lansing. About 45 miles away, but it was kinda like a HD on steroids. A lot more lumber, bigger store all around.

That is possible? I can blow a couple hours easily in a HD/Lowes just quickly browsing, let alone when I'm actually shopping. Spouses must get lost forever in a Menards.

I have mixed feelings on this. I have had some less-than-stellar customer service experiences with small local merchants, but I try to tolerate that somewhat, because I do want them to still be around. Big box stores are good at providing a consistent customer service experience because they treat employees as replaceable, and if somebody isn't good, the just fire them and plug a different person in that spot. The flip-side is that they are very bad at creating actual relationships between businesses and people. And providing a good work environment. And so forth. There is a local meat processor that I use, even though they can be gruff on the phone, and occasionally you have to be EXTRA careful to make sure they didn't mess up the cut sheet, because I am really, really happy that someone out there is running a family owned/operated business, and keeping the trade of small meat processing alive. This guy is teaching his sons how to process meat one animal at a time, by hand. On top of that, when we asked to tour his facility, he graciously accepted, and he even honored our request to be present while our first round of animals was killed, so we could understand the process better. So, in exchange for making sure that kind of thing still exists somewhere in the world, I'm willing to put up with a little bad customer service now and then. But that's a call that each of us has to make, and I don't mean to sound like I'm telling anybody else how to make it.

I'll have to check it out then. They just put up a new one about 15 minutes away and it sure is huge!

Who says that's a bad thing:laughing: Those are the only stores I like so I take my time:)

A lot of the old family businesses were closed on Sunday, and half of Sat. Competing against that is hard for a small operation.

Oh my goodness! There is a trailer maker near me whose hours are something like 9:00-4:30 weekdays. WTF?! If I have a job, when am I supposed to buy a trailer from you?

It is a mixed bag. When I first moved here and went in the local hardware store, the owner flat told me I was not welcomed. "It's you outsiders that are making me have to move to Georgia", and that is a direct quote. He moved and the new owner is just the opposite. Only bad part is it is very limited and the wood they carry is not a very good grade at all.

I have a contractor friend, he works monday - thurs. 7 hours per day. Goes fishing or hunting most weekends. I have never known him to work on Sunday. He's never made a whole lot, but he appears to be happy, and has a nice family. He is a remodeling guy, non union, has a wife with benefits.

I usually try to give our local ACE my business but...last week I stopped to get a self-propelled lawnmower. I spoke with the asst. manager about the various choices and he didn't seem to have a clue! He suggested we go look up the answers in the manuals...which he then couldn't find! Same story with line for a string trimmer he sold me. I continued down the road to the local HD where a kid in the outdoor section promptly answered my questions on mowers and showed me all the options for my trimmer. He even talked me into a less expensive mower and offered some maintenance tips!
