Are there, or has anyone seen any ads for a plain vanilla two wheel drive Jinma tractor, new or used? I've a neighbor that has a half acre garden and want to upgrade from little Craftsman Garden tractor that is almost impossible to put tiller or PTO attachments to. He needs to be able to have tiller in the 40" range, a small rotary mower 4', a small landscape rake also 4', a small disc. Power steering could be a option. He just want as plain and simple a tractor as he can get with the standard 3 point connection with a six spline 1-3/8" PTO. I had suggested a Jinma 20 hp. The problem is any advertised tractor have been the value added, with FEL and Bachoe and 4 wheel drive. He just needs a cost driven (IE cheap as he can get) tractor. I thought there might be some, somewhere. bjr

Another problem may be the tires. In addition to being available in smaller numbers, they also quite commonly had turf tires. Not so good in the scenario you paint. I think you'd be better off shopping for a 25hp 4wd. More plentiful, and more likely to have ag tires.

I should think he'd be able to come up with something like that without too much difficulty. Plenty of that sort of machine were sold over the years, both Chinese and ray-market Japanese. My neighbor has a 18 hp Shennui 2wd that he got for two grand in great shape and has run hard for ten years. Likewise for others. Many of those my just be sitting, waiting fora buyer to pup up - try a CraigsList want ad and ads in the local semi-rural shopping papers.

On alternative, if he can find it, is one of the older John Deere gardentractors in the 18-22 hp class. I have a friend with one, and it has both mid and rear PTO, TPH, diesel engine and small ag tires - I think he paid $600 for it last year and its about fifteen years old. Took some welding and fixing, but he runs a tiler, two-bottom ow, mower and rake with it just dandy. I looks like a lawn tractor on steroids and performs like a 20 hp Jinma 2wd. Parts for it are available but pricey, so he makes most of what he needs. He found it because he was keeping his eyes - AND his MIND - open to different possibilities for his 1-1/2 acre place.

For such a small plot, I'd stay away from 4WD - the larger turing circle is a pain in the tail and the additional maintenance isn't worth it at all.

Why not a Ford N series? They can be had for $1500 all day long here. I see a doen 2N's, 8N's, and 9N's for sale a month along the roads here.

That's a very good point. I see them for sale all the time priced reasonable. We had one growing up, and it was reliable, and handled great, and was very fine overall.

I'd look hard at a used 4wd Yanmar or Satoh. 2wd is too limiting in small tractors. Should be able to get one in the $3k range. If that's too pricy then I agree with DP.

If I list the 2wd tractors I ever drove that pull like mad for their size and power, it would be most I ever drove. The one tractor I have owed that would suffer in pulling power compared to its actual HP without 4wd has 4WD.

It sort of makes sense...the old tractors had 2wd, and had to be effective to sell widely (and be widely available even today,) so 2wd was effective in old tractors. Does that sound dumb? To me it does sound a bit dumb, but it seems to also mirror what I have noticed about tractors 2wd vs 4wd over the years.

My experience with large 4wd tractors is zero, I should admit that right up front. But I think I could plunk down one of many brands of 2wd tractors on the Ops property, and he would never have a complaint about the 2wd. Would I like to try a 4wd 8n? You betcha!

This one at $7500 is a pretty good deal since it's like new. Just remember than being a chinese tractor though means he will have to be handy. These are hobbist tractors more so than something like a John Deere of pretty much any variety.

Steven that 7500 for the Jinma/Farm Pro is high priced. NEW they can be had for that. Used should be able to find one with less than 500 hrs for 3500 or less in 25~28HP 4x4s. There are not all that many of the 20HP 2wheel drives as the original pricing was only a few hundred buck difference back when they first got to importing them I bought my JM284 (28hp 4x4) with lots of parts FEL, Back hoe, Finish Mower & 46" tiller for about 4500.00 circa 2002. I did the importing myself and shared a load of tractors from china so got all my shipping fee's paid for by selling some of them. So knowing what they cost NEW should help you out.

That is no deal. I bought my new Jinma 284 with a FEL for $9000. That is a $3000 tractor at best.
