Help- hard to tell where oil is on dip stick

Drilling small 1/16" holes at the full and add marks like the other poster spoke of is how I have fixed the problem. It works on metal or plastic. It is a good solution for engine oil, power steering or transmission dip sticks.

I don't know about the OP but the plastic hydro dipstick in my B3300 is only about 3/16" diameter (round) at the end where you get the reading, maybe even smaller. I don't think drilling a hole is the best option. I still plan on ordering some of the red dye I referenced in my previous post. I just have to manage to get to a JD dealership.

Any of you guys worked in a service station 40 years ago?

Pull the dip stick out, hold it in a clean towel, spit on the area of the high and low marks on the dipstick, rub it with the clean towel. Insert and remove the dipstick, and the line will be visible.

use a micro drill or dremil and dill a hole in the stick at the proper level.. should see the film bubble

Hold the stick in sunlight. The reflection will show where the oil is.

Yep, that's what I do. I not only had those yellow plastic dipsticks in my Kubotas, but I now have the same thing with the 15 hp Kohler engine in my Toro ZTR.

The dipstick on my 2008 Mahindra is a 3/16" rod colored dark grey with two grooves near the bottom end separated by a 1/4" or so to indicate full and add. I gently pull the rod out of the sump, rotate horizontal and use the side of my index finger under the rod to find where the oil is wetting the rod. I much prefer the flat dipstick design.

Good luck

I went to a JD dealer today and used the part number I referenced in a previous post. One bottle (supposed to treat 5 gallons of fluid) was a little over $5. I should have it Saturday or Monday. I'll post results.

Isn't is incredible that, given 21st century technology, something as simple as checking oil level still needs improvement? I do recall from years back a dipstick that had embossed cross hatching between "hi and lo" that allowed a quick visual of oil level.
Then there is sometimes the screw-in/out dipstick where you don't know which way to check the fluid level. For cripes sake.
